Dell optiplex gx150 cd drive won't boot

Hi,

I recently got a dell optiplex gx150 on ebay. When I try to install from the CD drive the screen goes blank and there is a flashing line on the top right hand corner of the screen. I have gone into the bios and changed the boot sequence to "boot from CD drive" and the same error occurs. There will be a few flashes of light from the CD drive as it starts to boot and then nothing, as above. Have made sure that the HD is master and that the CD drive is also master (as it is on a different cable on the motherboard). Tried a different disk that I know I can boot off and still the same issue. ANy suggestions on what is caussing this would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

I used F2 to get the boot menu and it is showing the HD as the primary drive, and the CD drive as a secondary drive.

When I press F12 it comes up with the error "attempting network boot." Then it goes to the blank screen with the flashing line in the left hand corner and after another minute or so comes up with the error message " strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility."

Problem solved! It was the CD ROM drive that was faulty. After swapping it out, it booted fine with another cdrom drive. Thanks!

You used the F2 to get into the BIOS. The F12 key should give you a boot menu.
    Try it again.

Have you pressed F12 on startup to get the boot menu?

Hmmm--when you went into the BIOS setup, your first boot device should be CD. The next your hard drive. The other boot devices should be set to disabled. Now if you have a third boot device as a network device, then your computer is not seeing the CD or the Hard drive--you have a problem. If all the drives are hooked up properly (sounds like you have that covered) then your motherboard is probably the problem.
I would try to disconnect all your stuff except the CD. Try it on the first IDE channel (set it either as cable select or master). If that fails, try it on the other channel. Do you have a second CD to swap out?
Still no boot? Bad motherboard.

I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 desktop. I have been unable to start Windows and receive the error message: Windows root system32/ntoskrnl.450L exe failure. How do I correct this problem?

You will have to boot in to repair console from XP cd and run it so it can try to repair the Operating system. Put in cd and restart and if it does not ask to boot to cd u have to change boot order in bios to boot to CD rom first. If all this fails you have to reinstall windows. Hope this helps.

I have an optiplex gx150 pIII, with a floppy drive. I downloaded the set up floppy so I could do a new install. after running the floppy disk, the messages says hit enter to continue. I place the xp sp2...

You don't need the install floppy... hit the F12 key when booting and you will get a boot order selection and tell it to boot to the CD. If it still doesn't see the HDD then you are most likely having a disk read problem with your hard drive. If that is the case you should boot into the system BIOS and see if the HDD is recognized there.

DELL OptiPlex GX150 Upgrading

The fastest processor you can install in a GX150 is a Pentium III 1.13 Ghz processor.

The Socket 370 was a design used only for P3 processors.

Max RAM for that system is 512MB no way to upgrade past that.

If you paid $100 for a GX150, you paid way too much (You can buy a refurbished Dell Dimension C521 for $225 at their refurb site)

Boot problem with Dell Optiplex GX150

To reinstall Xp from the CD you need to press F2 and go into the BIOS then select the boot order configuration and make the CD the first boot device and the hard disk the second boot device.
After installing XP, if you wish you can go back into the BIOS and change the boot order to boot from the hard disk first.

Contact Dell technical support to get the CD read the partition on your hard drive to restore to factory settings. It won't be able to work without one since it has to boot from the CD in order to get it to work.

Blue Screen error

Try to boot the PC without the XP Home CD in the CD drive, and keep pressing the F8 key until it comes up with a boot menu that includes a Safe Mode option.

If you had the XP Pro CD I'd suggest doing a recovery, but XP Home doesn't have that option I don't think.

You may have to try a few times until the boot menu appears. Don't hold the F8 key down - keep pressing it!

When you get into Safe Mode, right click on My Computer and choose Properties. Then go to Hardware tab (i think - not in winXP right now) and choose device manager. Just remove the Video Card from the list altogether, and then restart. Should force it to use generic video card drivers.

then check your video card model and look for the updated driver
