1st possible solution: Check your hard drive(s) and partitions for errors. You can do this by going to My Computer > right click on a drive > Properties > 'Tools' tab > Check Disk or Check Now
2nd possible solution: You may have backed up your files from an NTFS system and are trying to restore to a FAT32 system. If so, convert your computer to NTFS by right clicking on 'My Computer' > Manage > Storage > Disk Management> Right click on your primary drive > and select convert to NTFS.

Testimonial: "THANK YOU SO MUCH..i NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT TO CHECK FOR THAT..Never had this problem before"

SOURCE: windows explorer issues

uninstall PowerDesk or My PowerDesk. Some malware camouflage themselves as PDShExt.dll, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the PDShExt.dll process on your pc whether it is a pest or the real deal. If neither program list above is installed, download http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/index.html?ref=file.net as run the program.

SOURCE: msftstp.exe has encountered a problem

msftstp.exe is a malware program. Make sure you scan using a good malware eliminator (malwarebytes is a very good free one)
So bottom line, you don't want msftstp.exe to be running and you need to kill it.

How do I backup my files and folders in XP?

Windows XP comes with a backup tool called NTBACKUP (NTBACKUP.MSI from Windows XP CD-ROM). In Windows XP Home Edition, this tool has to be installed manually from the CD-ROM, whereas in Windows XP Professional, this tool is installed by default.
Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file in the following location on the Windows XP Home Edition CD to start a wizard that installs NTBackup: X:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP
X:\ refers to the CD-ROM drive-letter
Note: Usually, OEMs such as Compaq, DELL won't ship the Windows XP CD nor they include the NTBACKUP utility by default. You can download a copy of NTBACKUP.MSI here

Backing up your files using NTBackup Utility:
Click Start, Run and type NTBACKUP
Select Backup tab at the top
In the left pane, scroll to the file/folder which you want to backup and put a checkmark on it.
At the bottom, mention the output filename (the backup output)
Once set, click Start Backup button in the right, and again click Start Backup in resulting dialog

NTBACKUP does not have the ability to write to CDs directly. You will need to save the backup to hard drive, then transfer or burn it to a CD-ROM. Also, while backing up several files, make sure you backup the files in separate sets of each max 650MB (so that it fits on a CD-ROM)
See also FREE Windows Backup Software add-on for NTBackup
Enhanced Windows Backup uses Windows' built in backup engine called Windows Backup (ntbackup.exe) which provides state-of-the-art core backup technology. Enhanced Windows Backup substantially extends the capabilities of NTBackup, providing an effective integrated backup solution.

Seagate expansion 2tb

Cause:
This problem is caused by an issue with the Windows 7 Backup and Restore utility when using drives with 4K Logical sector sizes, which are found on WD 2.5 TB and larger external drives. This is different from an "Advanced Format" (AFD) drive which use 4K physical sector sizes. AFD drives should not cause this problem.

Solution:
It is still possible to use a 2.5 TB drive or larger with Windows 7 Backup and Restore, as long as you don't need to use the drive with Windows XP. Using the WD Quick Formatter tool, select the Factory Default configuration to reformat the drive.

Warning: This tool will erase all data on your drive, so take the necessary precautions.
After formatting the drive to Factory Default mode, the drive will be usable in Windows Vista and Windows 7. However, the drive will not be recognized in Windows XP. This is the only way to get Windows 7 Backup and Restore to work correctly.

How do I do a full recovery with the disc

Turn your computer on.

Insert the Disk and choose to enter BIOS, should be F2 but watch the screen to see the right function key.

Change the boot device order to: CD-ROM, HDD in that order.

Save changes and restart the computer.

The Recovery Disk would boot up and a wizard will guide you through the recovery process.

Follow the instructions to recover your computer.

Need to install in new system Microsoft xp. I have the Maxtor one touch III 4.00.0083. cannot back up new files.

You do not have the back up utility installed or it is disabled.

You will have to install or enable backup software to accomplish this task. Windows comes with a backup utility, you may have discarded it or disabled it or it could be bad. Backup utilities can be purchased (I use Windows Live) or found on the WWW for a fee or for free. Google backup utility and see what you find.

If you have the Maxtor install disk, I believe there is a backup utility on that CD.

Thanks for clarifying the question.

Restoring files after using the Backup utility.

1. Plug in the USB drive that contains the data.
2. On the XMB go to Settings then System Settings
3. Go to Back Up Utility like before but
4. Choose Restore rather than Back Up
5. The PS3 does the rest

You can have the PS3 delete the data file from the USB drive by choosing Delete Backup Data.

I try to make my toshiba external hard drive back up my files from my pc but i don't know how to do it?

there are different things you may want to try..
if backup is what you need and not just a copy of your files you can use and backup utility that comes with windows xp pro (I'm assuming that's the os your using). to look for the backup utility go to ; start>all programs>accessories>system tools>backup, it will usually open in wizard mode so follow the instructions.. basically what you will be doing is determining what needs to be back up, where you want that backed up (select the externa hdd unit that should be avaliable if you have your external hdd connected) and when you want to start back up... read through the prompts... it should be fairly easy.
if you don't have the backup utility (you may be using home xp edition)... you may need to get a windows xp cd and follow this instructions to install it as described here:

Error copying file or folder

One of the most important yet overlooked elements of PC maintenance is data backup. If you do not perform regular backups, chances are your productivity will eventually suffer from data losses or a failed Windows installation.

All versions of Windows after 3.1 ship with a free backup utility called Microsoft Backup. It is not the best backup program available, but it may be sufficient for your needs. (Backup is better in later versions of Windows. Microsoft recommends Win98/Me users purchase a third-party utility.) If you want more control over your backups, consider purchasing a third-party program.

Backup is part of the System Tools utility. However, Setup does not install it by default in Win98/Me/XP Home. If you cannot locate Backup, visit the Microsoft support site and query for article No. 152561 (Win98), No. 264541 (WinMe), or No. 302894 (WinXP Home).

In Win98/Me, click Start, select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Backup. To create and run a backup, click the Create A New Backup Job radio button and click OK. Follow the prompts to create a full or partial backup. If you want to create a backup set and run it later or run an existing backup set, open Backup and click the Open An Existing Backup Job radio button and click OK. You can now access the main Backup dialog box.

In Win2000/XP, navigate to the System Tools utility and select Backup. Click the Backup Wizard button. If you do not see a Backup Wizard button, click the Welcome tab. In WinXP, the wizard will start automatically if you are in wizard mode. Follow the prompts to create your backup set.

When you reach the last dialog box, Completing The Backup Wizard, you can click the Advanced button to create a backup schedule (this option is not available in Win98/Me). When you reach the When To Back Up dialog box, select the Later radio button and click the Set Schedule button. Perform data backups on a schedule that is appropriate to the importance of your files (once a week is a common timeframe). You should also perform a system backup at least once a month.

If you do not want to use the wizard, or you are working with an existing backup, open Backup and click the Backup tab to access the main Backup dialog box.
