2005 Ultra. 56,000 miles. Going up Vail pass, two up and pulling a trailer. rpm were at a steady 4000 at about 50 mph for about 5 miles. Suddenly a huge amount a smoke came out of the tail pipe then no smoke. It still sounded and ran fine. I stopped and there was oil leaking out of the intake. I cleaned it up and made it to Denver just fine. Bike is running good. A little more oil in the air cleaner when I got home but seems to be running fine. Any idea what this might be? Did the oil get too hot?

sounds like the floats are stuck. cleaning carbs should do the trick. its a good practice to start up motorcycles and let them warm up from time to time while being stored.

With the oil problem I read on another site that Yamaha did that so that excess oil would be burned up in normal running (but this was usually smaller amounts). Anyways they disconnected the tube going to the air cleaner and had tied up in such a way that any excess oil would land on the chain thus lubricating it. But if you have that much oil coming out it could be that you have put in too much.

Compression leakdown test should be done first to determine if it has a valve wear problem which is the most common cause of your problem. Oil in the airbox boot is most commonly caused by compression blowby. This would be a function of worn piston/ring/cylinder clearances. The leakdown test would point this out also.

hello, you may need to check float in carb, could be sticking or bad, make sure plugs aren wet with gas insted of oil, you can smell gas fouled plugs, than oil, gas coming out of breather sounds like float needs to be adjusted or floats bad or trash in carb, may have broke ring also
