Are you sure you have an ATA 40 GB hard drive?
According to the specs of your laptop, it should have an 80 GB Sata hard drive:
HP Compaq Presario C502US 15.4" Notebook PC RQ335UA#ABA, Intel Celeron M 1.86GHz, 512MB DDR2, 80GB SATA, Intel Graphics 950, Combo Drive, WLAN, Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic
