My siste in laws Dell laptop quit after her daughter had used it, neither know what happened but the computer powers on and then a message like, error disc failure or disc read failure something like that comes up and nothing else. Can you help ?

I use a CD called Hiren or another called UBCD that has the utilities needed to regain or change passwords but beware as these disks need to be used carefully as they contain some quite powerful software

You could also (desktop computers) reset the BIOS as the instructionsare in the manual available over on the Dell site.

if it is a laptop then they are and can be quite tricky and again may even on occasion need to go to a shop for re-set.

OK, if you get this message at start up of your computer, it is not good at all.

I would suggest that you first try and open your laptop and make sure that the cables is still connected properly. If this does not work, you will need to plug your HDD into another computer, if you get prompted with the same message your HDD is dead.

this is very common with dell laptops. i work 4 days a week repairing computers and laptops and the amount of dell laptops that i see with this very same problem. i don't know the price of a new battery but i do knowo that the same thing will happen again. sorry i don't have the fix you might have been looking for.

usually the bios password is 0000 by default

There at least three possible reasons for your problem.
.
1) You are using the wrong charger, or
2) Your battery may be defective, or
2) If you are using the original charger that came with your laptop, it may be defective, or
3) Your laptop charging port may need to be replaced.

You need to take your laptop to a local computer repair shop to have the problem correctly diagnosed.

I suggest you DONT USE PINCH POWER CORD FOR SAFETY.

PLEASE TELL ME IS YOUR POWER CORD & THE PINCHED CORD ARE SAME? I MEAN SAME MODEL? AFTER PLUGING OF YOUR CORD, THE BATTERY CHARGING LIGHTS ITS ON? IF NO THEN I GUESS THAT CABLE NOT SUPPORT HER LAPTOP.
VISIT A DELL SERVICE CENTER OR A SHOWROOM AND BUY NEW CORD WHICH IS MADE FOR YOUR DAUGHTER LAPTOP MODEL.
OTHER WISE SOME CHANCES OF SHORTCIRCUIT ON MOTHERBOARD.

Ok - dont panice
FIrst start it an HiT F12 - then select diagnostics and run then - if it runs though good - your hardware is OK.
Next restart and as the machine bleeps hit F8
Select safe mode and see if it starts that way.
If it does cool. SO now run a disk check on the main drive (c:\) by right clicking on it and selecting "properties" and then TOOLs tab and then DISK CHECK - check the box automatically fix errors and let it run
WHen done see if it will restart ok

This appears due to some range of possibile problems. Try following these steps: 1 ) Boot the system > goto BIOS setting (press DEL or F2 as soon as u switch on the power switch) > check the boot sequence somewhere in that settings and choose to "boot from the harddisk"     This has got some 50% probabily of solving the problem.
2) If not, you have to reinstall the OS using a operating System CD. Put the CD in, boot up and follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the OS.  DONT FORMAT IT - you will loose all ur data. Just reinstall it. SOme boot sector files might hav been corrupted. Reinstalling the OS will surely solve ur problem. Thankyou!
