If you see a very dim image or black screen or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

You need to check the device manager for any "!" symbols. They are most likely there for your audio and video drivers. This means that the current drivers installed are not compatible. See below for the correct drivers.

Try unplugging your video card and re-seating it. Sometimes, when they are cleaned, the card gets bumped and isn't quite seated right. If that doesn't work, try doing the same thing with your memory sticks.

The screen of my XPS M 1330 notebook is dark. I can see my screen in the back ground and the computer works fine, I need a flash light to see the screen

You have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out; usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Xps m1330 doesnt work?

Remove the battery, and unplug to turn it completely off. then plug everything back in and restart if you still have a black screen it could be your LCD going out. which is a very expensive replacement part.

Does sound like a power issue. Assuming it's windows xp, you can check to see if it is a poiwer management setting:
Go to start, settings, control panel, display, and on the 'screen saver' tab at the bottom should be the "monitor power" area, click "power".
There is a power schemes area there. Check out what your settings are. Laptops often have settings for when plugged in versus when unplugged; when troubleshooting this make sure you are positive about if you are 'plugged in' or not as it will affect settings! :)
(On Vista go to Control Panel, Power Options; same thing, change your settings there)
