42" AKAI plasma screen problems

Sometimes when I turn on the tv it has a funky coloring to it like its almost what an image would look like picking up on body heat or maybe even looking like a negative in a picture. Any suggestions to whats going on.

    1) LCD screen began shortly after first few days of use, showing bright green grainy areas. These seem to replace the certain colors. The problem seem to come and go but progressively has gotten worse. Now we cannot even make out most of the picture.

    2) We have tried different cable channels and it does the same thing on all channels.

    3) We have tried replacing the source cables from wall to VCR, from VCR to TV; we tried directly from wall to TV. No other TV’s in house have this problem.

    4) We have tried with DVD player, the same problem occurs from that source. We have checked the component cables to make sure correctly connected, blue to blue, green to green and red to red.

    5) We have tried from the VCR with commercial videos, not recorded videos. The same problem occurs.
We have tried ALL of the suggestions in the troubleshooting guide with TV user’s manual. All is correct, nothing has changed since originally installed and all worked fine when we first began using it. Problem began a week or two after initial installation and daily use began. We have even tried resetting the factory defaults to see if that would help and the problem continues

The picture from both cable and satellite source looks as though it is a type of “heat sensor” image. These fluorescent like effects are usually seen on the edges of items or on the brightest areas of a screen image. This is NOT a problem when viewing DVDs; they show perfectly. Initially when the TV was new, I was told that this problem was due to the fact that I did not have a digital input source so I just ignored the problem. Now that I have just recently upgraded to Direct TV (100% digital), the problem is still evident. Now, my TV is out of warranty and this has been a problem since I removed this TV from the box. I have tried every adjustment and connection configuration possible and I am still haveing the same problem. Can anyone at least tell me what is wrong or if this is something that is commonly due to a known problem of some sort? Any advice would be appreciated aside from taking it out back and shooting itJ !

This is a sign of a lack of the luminance signal which may denote a problem with the chromanance signal ariving fast to the screen then the Luminance signal this is video problem. You will need to have a qualified TV technician look at this. You can find one on FixYa.com, or look in your area for one.

Try unplugging it for an hour or so or try change sources , if the computer ever fell asleep while it was plugged in it is possible it triggered a sleep mode in the tv. Most will do such a thing. It is doubtful that the computer caused any damage to it but i would advise against using a plasma tv as a computer monitor because burn in WILL eventually occur with a static image left on the screen constantly.

Try putting a fan on the back of the tv to see if it is getting better. If it does then you probally have a board that is overheating. If that is the case then CAREFULLY !!! remove the back and place where you can turn on and safely access the open back NO TOUCHING STUFF !!! Mabey lay it face down on a glass table or lay it on a table with 25% hanging over the edge to see the screen. Then take a COLD blow dryer and blow it on the boards to find out which one makes it get better. If one does then it will probally be your problem board. Make extremely sure that is the one before removing it by blowing from all angles on the boards around it without air hitting the suposed problem board. Then try a little hot air to see if that starts the problem on that board so you can be sure. Of course check the surrounding and offending board several times to be sure before removing.

Hello Lunhoo,
Your TV should still be in warranty. If so, yes you should take it in for repair. Even if it's not in Warranty, Akai may have a special warranty extension for your TV. Check it out.
Good luck.

Black Vertical Bar

It will burn into the screen overtime. The Akai units have a resistor on the address board that feeds the PDP that usually has a crack in the solder on one or both ends of it. There are about 4 address boards that are right below the panel itself and the suspect one is the board right below the line that is appearing. Have someone with solder skills repair it.
