I am trying to get sound to come out of some speackers i bought for my computer because before i could not hear anything. i plugged everything up but there is still no sound.

can you hear them when you have it set to speaker phone? the music part plays through a speaker and the phone uses the ear piece to make sounds, your earpiece is bad, they sell them on ebay for $10.00 must be very common problem.
make sure your sound driver is installed and working, if not go to a search engine and type in the name of your sound card and then the word driver (ex Sound Blaster driver)
selectbanker, As a test only try this. Remove green plug from rear of pc. Find old am/fm stereo transistor radio or even a portable cd player and connect the green plug to your "new" audio source. Can you hear anything coming out of the monitor's speakers? Also try a set of stereo headphones in the green audio "out" jack to see if sound is coming out of the pc. Try installing and configuring a media player such as windows media player. If you already have a media player install, check the configuration and file extensions.
It sounds like your headphone/hold cable is faulty. Try plugging it into a sound device with a docking bay. If no sound comes out of there either then it's a faulty logic board.
