Question about Emerson EWR20V4 DVD Recorder/VCR

EWR20V5 DVD Recording Error

At first it quit recording/dubbing on ALL the DVD-R disks, except for Sony. It quit.....then I used a DVD cleaning disk.....then it worked.....now I keep getting the same recording error: "Cannot record on this disk" E4 54037380. Now the disks I have used up to this point were 1x-16x, so should I try a lower speed or is this unit a lost cause? And yea, I tried their 800 number too, and that was a waste of time. I haven't even had this unit a year yet. Any help on this would be great.

I've had this same problem for over a year. I bought it at Walmart and they replaced it once. I sent Emerson an email asking if they make it a habit selling products that don't work and if so, we should inform local stores not to carry it anymore.....

The disc must be DVD-R with an R4.7 under the logo and they MUST be 4X or 8X specific .... the cannot be 1X to 8X or 1X to 16X or note up to 16X .... the disc box must state 4X or 8X ONLY .... and yes they are hard to find for sure.....

I just received this error code on my EVR20V5 DVD Recorder. From previous posts, I knew it had to do with the optical eye being dirty. I had a can of Radio Shack dust remover spray that I use to blow dust out of desktop CPU units & keyboards, so I pressed the button to open the DVD tray and gave it about a 5 second shot. I waited a minute for everything to dry and tried it again. This time it recorded perfectly with no error message. Give it a try--it might work for you.

Tell them to check your serial number on your unit if it was manufactured in 04 it does qualify for a firmware upgrade which will make the x8 disc, work. This unit is so old already that x8 is the only discs that were made for this unit. x16 or up to x16 doesnt work for this unit. resource:bought one and it still works perfect. Error code:e4 is error on optical pickup. To fix that is to get that firmware if you qualify or the lens is out of alignment.

I have the same unit and the SAME problem. After about 6 months of use, I got the infamous E4 error when trying to record to disk. Calling customer service is a joke. My unit plays DVDs and VHS tapes OK, but it just won't record. By the way, this is a replacement unit because the first one I bought didn't work on 8X or 16X discs. It only worked on 4 X. They sent this piece of crap as a replacement and now it's not working. I give up with Emerson products.

I live in Ft. Worth, Tx and I have the exact problem. My unit plays both dvd and vhs, but won't record. I get the same error code E4 54037380. I paid over 200 dollars in Jan. 2006 for this unit. After reading your comments, I'm not going to waste my time with their customer service. I wasted alot of dics thinking the dics I bought were bad. Lesson learned, DON'T BUY EMERSON PRODUCTS!!!

Hello everyone with the dreaded E4 54037380 issue on the Emerson or Funai DVD/Video combi unit. I like you all did get the same problem but not anymore! It's down to the DVD discs you use. I now sell a brand of disc that burns at 8X speed everytime! So far I have not had one failure! No they are not Sony, Maxell or any other branded disc. What I am now offering on my online shop is a test disc for a £1 inc postage if it works and you order a spindle of 50 discs from us we will refund you the £1 on your order!
For more information about these special DVD-R's please visit our online shop at gregoryav.co.uk --- I hope this post sorts out the frustrations caused by the stupid error code situation.

I posted this Jan 3, 2009 and seem to have a solution.
Similar problem. E4 54037380 Can not record on this disc. Even though it is from the same package of DVD-Rs that I have successfully recorded to previously. Contacted them about 9 months ago without a successful resolution so I am trying again. Unit will play any DVDs, will record and play back DVD-RWs but will not record on my imation DVD-Rs 8X discs that worked fine in the past. Starts to record for a few seconds and then the error message appears (sometimes with slightly different final 4 digits of error number). Other postings have suggested: maybe a firmware update is available (I requested and we will see Emerson's response), trying slower speed discs (I am skeptical since these 8x imation discs in this same package previously worked, and the instructions say 1-16x for DVD-Rs), unplugging the unit for 1/2 hour to reset the unit (did not work), playing the last disc recorded to the end and then trying a new disc (now it recorded for about 30 seconds rather than 10 seconds but then got E4 54043E02 error message, different but still did not work). So I am hoping for something more productive out of Emerson this time.
Update Jan 17,2009. Bought a CD and DVD cleaner disc with the little brushes on it. Cleaned the EWR20V5 per the cleaner instructions and tried to recod on the imation DVD-R 8X that I had used successfully in the past, no luck, same error message. So I bought another brand, maxell DVD-R 4.7GB up to 16X and IT WORKED. The instructions on pg 25 say for DVD-R "up to 16X" may be used but "4X-8X disc is recommended". Go figure, no idea why the 16X worked but they did in this case. So just a suggestion to try other brands. Someone else had suggested that also so I gave it a shot. $8 of new disc and $13 for the cleaner and I've back in business.

I have the same problem as most of you. I made a phone call, and I was told reboot my Emerson EWR20V4 ( same as V5 ), unplug from wall, wait 15 minutes, plug back in, and reset the clock.. I was Dubbing VHS-DVD 16X, AND IT'S WORKING, made in 2005.

I have the same problems as described herein. I called CS and was strung along with the promise that I qualified for a free firmware upgrade. When I agreed to get it I was told that the disc upgrades are no longer being offered for free and that they were not sure that the upgrade wiould solve the problem.

My boat now has a new anchor.

Never again shall I purchase Emerson.

I can record both my VCR and DVD just fine, however I cannot play any disks unless they are specifically 4x. Any movies I copy or download will not play unless 4x. I called cs and they did send me the firmware upgrade, however I get the disc error when I try to load it. Still trying to get ahold of CS to see how i can load this disk. Once I get the upgrade I am sure my unit will be fine. I do however agee that these units should be bured. This is also my second unit since the first one did not work. DO NOT BUY EMERSON.

Ok guys, I know these are old posts, but after getting the same error code, I Called 1-800-605-8453 this is the Customer service line. I was just told that this E4 error code means that the disc isn't being read, because the unit is dirty or the optical eye is going out (my unit is 2yrs old) I will get a cleaning kit and then proceed. I confirmed this error code online at an error code site.
http://www.infinadyne.com/ErrorCodes.html So good luck to you all.
For further info I was told that the E15 code means "cannot write after DVD-R reserve track"
E-29 Disc is protected
E-3 No Data writing after 3 trys

I'm having the exact same problem as rebell. Yes, I've called customer service 3 times. Tried disk cleaner = "cannot record on this disk." Tried lower speed DVD - "Cannot record on this disk." (by the way, the customer service guys told me after 7 months it won't record on 16x disks. Trouble is, its almost impossible to find 8x disks anymore. Third time I called, they said to unplug it for at least 45 minutes. I unplugged it for 4 hours, and - "cannot record on this disk." Folks, DON'T BUY THIS UNIT! YOU WILL BE SORRY! Razorusskie

I had the same problem with that unit. It worked fine for awhile (long enough that I couldn't take it back to the store) but then started telling me I couldn't record on any disc, including the list they suggested using. I called customer service and they told me to box it up and send it to them (they sent UPS labels). Got the unit back and had the same problem, sent it back in and they sent a new one in replacement. Still had the problem and finally asked for a refund. I took that and bought a Magnavox unit (which, funnily enough is made by the same company). Other than the problem I had the other day, which wound up being a bad disck, it's worked fine. I had never had a bad experience with Emerson brand products and was very disappointed in their unit but they did at least give me a refund (well after a year from the original purchase date). It does take time to get through to a live person, but if you keep having the problem, be persistent.

anything higher than that wont work . This is for RW.. i cant find any DVD -R s that work. At first i used DVD R Maxwell Data Video and they worked fine but they dont make them anymore .
The Sony DVD s worked fine . Good Luck.

I am having the same errors, trying DVD-R and DVD-RW they all used to work and after a year or so it just quit all same errors everyone is listing above. Another ODD thing is that after I unplugged it one time and did wait the 15 min to re plug in the clock would not work, I would set it and it would never change or work!

I was having the same problem. It recorded on a older disc a friend gave me and than rejected every other one I bought. If I would have had a hammer in my hand at the time I would have demolished it. But I calmed down an the next day called customer support. It took a while to ger through(thank God for speakerphone). But they were very polite and told me what to do to see if my unit was able to have a firmware upgrade and they are sending it to me free of charge. Now I am waiting for the disc to arrive. When I get it I will let you know what happens. I would give support a call it worked for me so far just remember to have a speaker phone.

I am not surprised at the comments on this disc player, my advice would be to Burn It..

What does error code e22 mean

e22--will not finalize DVD-R disk (due to dirty lens, I think)
*unplug unit and replug after 20 minutes
*restore settings if needed, and reset clock
*insert & run/play a DVD lens cleaner disk
*dub video from the HD to a NEW BLANK DVD
*finalize after dubbing is finished
THIS WORKED ON MY MAGNAVOX MDR 533H/F7

PS: make sure that the new blank DVD disk is from the same pile of disks that you were able to finalize before.

You need to go into the set up menu and select recording options. On the recording options menu, scroll down to dubbing options. On the dubbing options menu select either VCR to DVD or DVD to VCR.
Recording and Dubbing are not the exactly the same thing. You use the record buttons to record TV directly to VCR/DVD you use the dubbing buttons and set up to record DVD to VCR or VCR to DVD.
Hope this helps.

Try different brands of disk, most dvd-r recorder are disk sensitive, buy only one disk per brand, find the brand compatible to your recorder by just inserting the disk and wait for confirmation that it is ready for recording session. I have tried around five brands, sony and maxell as well as verbatim are good dvd-r disk.

Try using 8x and lower DVDs and -R ones; try cleaning with CD cleaning disk and then try recording a few min again. If that doesn't help try unplugging and waiting about 30min then put in disk that was previously recorded and go to last item and play it to end (if 2hr long skip to last skip and then play until it finishes) - now try just recording a few min using the manual DVD record button and see if error comes up again - usually this unplugging somehow resets everything. Hope this helps ya'll.
