Problem for LG RC797T

My LG RC797T DVD recorder can't read some DVD's

Some discs (even those commercially created) cause "Unknown Disc" error message. I tried to enter the 1397139, but the unit appears to only want a (6) digit number and starts over with the 7th digit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ron

- I tried cleaning the lens, but that failed to solve the problem.

- Based on other posting for the same problem, it was suggested to enter 1397139 using the remote. Once accepted, regional codes were available to be re-set. I tried entering the code several ways and have never been able to have the code accepted. It appears to want a (6) digit code because after entering "139" the next (3) digits "713" reduce in font size and when the 7th digit is enter it clears the previous (6).

- I trying to solve the "Unknown Disc" error message that appears with many of the discs that I try and play.

I have tried cleaning the lens, but the problem was not correct. I have tried entering the codes (1397139 and 314159) provided by other posting on this site, but I was not able to enter the area that allows for region code changes. With no disc in the unit the screen reads "No Signal." VHS tapes play without problems as do some discs.

- what are finalized discs?  Some commercial discs and some homemade disc play while some commercial and some homemade do not.  The discs that now will not play did play at one time.  The unit is 1.5 years old but has had very little use.

- I was able to open the unit and cleaned the lens and spindle, but the problem remains. The only disc that was created by copying a VHS to a DVD using this unit plays with no problem.  Some of the commercially created disc play while others do not.  This commercially created discs played in the unit before the problem started and will still play in other DVD players.  With the problem discs it sounds like the unit is trying to read the disc, stops the then tries again.  There is a noticeable change in the "whirling" as it runs and stops.
Thanks, Ron

- I have tried several times to enter 1397139 code, but as stated in earlier postings, the unit displays the (139) in larger font, then (713) in smaller text and then starts over when the (9) is entered. I have not been able to determine how to put the unit in 480i so that might be the problem entering the code.

Thanks

- The problem occurs with clean and unscratched discs that previously played in this unit and will still play in other units.

Thanks,
Ron

The lens is possibly dirty try a lens cleaner and also blow some canned air inside to get the dust out.

as your player will only play the disc that are finalised.it will not play the non finalised disk.the lens will not read the disk which are not finalised.as the player is only compitable to finalised disk.
so its not playing the other disc.

Hello rgabbott2003,

There are several things that are the can obviously cause disc failure
1.Dirty lens (ruled out as some disc's work)

2.Scratched disc's
---Try cleaning the disc's themselves or inspecting them for scratch's ect.

3.Region settings
---Only known region hack is as follows
Click the HOME button on the remote with the unit in 480i resolution
Click the setup page
Click Start
Click TV Aspect
highlight the 16x9 wide aspect ratio
enter on remote control this coded sequence:
1397139

Edit specific "Options"

Option 2: 35 (enables Divx/Xvid playback)
Option 4: ff (enables Vcd and SVCD playback)
Option 5: ff (enables region free playback (region 0) DVD playback)
Option 6: ce (enables Insignia brand startup logo on boot)
Option 6: c0 (enables LG brand startup logo on boot)

Post back with any further info..As these are the leading causes of disc failure besides a bad laser.

- Chances are that may not work for that model. Alot of makes and models do not have any known region hacks or they have different firmware and are unable to hack them.
--You can verify if this is even important by looking at the region code on the back of the dvd box. A small globe symbol with a number in it. Post that if you can.

It could be the disc's are going bad, can you say if they look scratched up on the bottom or not ?

look it is not a region problem If it was a region issue, you would be getting a "wrong region" message when u get the wrong disk on it but it is not the case actually it is lens getting dirty or weak issue 100%

if lens cleaning doesnt help u here thru disc lens cleaner with brushes installed on the surface of disc try cleaning like 3 times in a row if it doesnt

then try the physical cleaning like opening the cover it is the last attempt if u are expert enuff to un cover the player and see that shiny eye like thing called lens installed in the disc loading compartment , if u see that try cleaning it with a good quality micron fiber cloth used to clean lcd's or with Ear bud in round circular motion very gently without applying pressure on the lens , i am pretty sure that if ur player lens have strength enuff to carry on further it will do otherwise if u want to get this solved then go for laser lens replacement it is not that much expensive as a new player

pls feel free to ask more if u want and rate me well if it helped

thanx for coming to FIXYA for solving ur problems

- pls also consider this may be a solution to ur problem

The symptons of your Dvd Player or Recorder requiring a spindle clean are as follows. The machine may start to feel sluggish, particularly when formatting, performing erase functions, and may take longer to recognize discs. Then, you will start to get errors during recording and erasing, failed formatting, and the machine will not recognize some discs. Eventually it will be totally unpredictable and unreliable, and you may find that even after dismantling your machine and cleaning the lens most thoroughly, the problems persist. It may still play CDs and shop bought DVDs, those functions are the last to go. I will almost guarantee that this means a spindle clean is needed, although many would incorrectly blame these symptoms on a dirty lens, or even a defective laser, but the reality is, if the machine worked perfectly once, the laser is almost certainly fine.

The spindle is the little round platter inside your machine that your disc sits on. Discs go into the machine and there they are placed on the spindle, after which a circular magnetic grip clamps the disc into its final position, the disc being sandwiched firmly between the spindle and the grip.

But the correct functioning of a spindle is absolutely CRITICAL in such a precise piece of technology as a DVD recorder, there is no room for error here as a dirty spindle will not spin the disc perfectly evenly - it can introduce wobble and jitter into the disc which even the cleanest lens will not cope with.

You do need to open up your machine to clean the spindle but it is well worth it if your machine is out of warranty. Take off the outer lid and locate the screws that hold the lid on the drive unit. There are usually four screws, two at either side. Remove those screws and that lid should now be loose, but don't use brute force

You should now see the spindle. Notice the black rubber on the outer part of the spindle. With isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds, gently but thoroughly clean this rubber. It can sometimes look surprisingly dirty - carpet fibre, dust and tar from heavy smoking are the usual suspects in my experience. Clean the whole spindle too, then go back and clean that rubber again until it doesn't leave a mark on a fresh cotton bud dipped in alcohol. You may as well clean the lens while you are here. If you haven't cleaned a lens before, dip a fresh cotton bud in alcohol and brush the lens very gently with it, the lens will move slightly as it is spring mounted so don't be alarmed. Just be gentle. At this stage it's a good idea to clean the grip which is set into the lid of the drive unit. Now put your machine back together.

and see if it works

pls let me know abt the results and rate me well if it helped

thanx again for coming here and trusting fixya for problems
