The cpu (jp16) and back panel fan (jp20) both stop running after a few seconds. I had this problem repaired under warranty in 2004, the problem happened again after a while. There is no warranty now. Can I replace the faulty (sensor?) myself. I have the laptop stripped down in case the MB needs replaced. There are red, black and white wires going to the MB, what would the voltage be supplied to each. One would be 5v. I'd like to repair the laptop if I can it works well. At present I have two large cooling fans behind and a usb powered fan/base unit it sits on, but this is a hassle.
-   Hello: I am having the same problems with the fans on a Inspiron 2650. I bought a used mb off of ebay and installed it but the fans still don't run. The cpu fan runs about 10 seconds when 1st booting but stops and doesn't run after that. The cpu fan should run all of the time shouldn't it? I did a continuity test on the old motherboard. I checked from where the black wire from the cpu fan plugs in to ground and it showed continunity. I called Dell about the first mb and they said it would be a mb fault if the fans were good. I used a 4.5 volt dc power supply to test the fans and they run. Thanks, Jim -   jimpeoples1
you could do a continuity test on the black. If it,s earth/ground.
then add a wire to ground it constantly. the fan will most likely run constantly at full speed. bypassing any sensor.
This is only a suggestion, but may solve your problem.

My Dell Inspiron works perfectly fine on the dock. When I use it away from the dock, though, the power "comes and goes" and the screen flashes dim then bright repeatedly. Eventually I see that my battery is not charging. I have replaced the external power cord and that doesn't seem to help.
