Linksys Wireless B Router Compatible with Windows Vista?

We got this Linksys wireless B router years ago, and it has been working fine with our two laptops running XP. We just got another laptop running Vista, and I am having so much problem connecting it to the internet wirelessly through the router. The laptop can "see" the signal, and it managed to make the connectioin several times, but the connection is extremely slow, and inconsistant (connection is lost frequently, and then restores automatically again). Is this a compabilty problem? Is there anything I can do, or do I need a new router? And if I do a new router, will the two old laptops compatible with the new g & n router?

I would advise you to purchase a Linksys G router, Model # WRT54G2. Works well with Vista and your other laptops will work also.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know.
If this solves your issue, please be kind to rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Hello,

What is your connection speed? To many computers on a home connection can slow it down.
You also might check to make sure that your computer with the router has enabled the mac address of the new vista computer.

Here is a link from linksys giving an example of mac address permissions.

Please check whether your computer's wireless connection enabled or disabled. If you are using windows 7 this information you can find in network sharing center. By accident if WLAN is disabled it can be enabled. Also power cycling the router may do the trick.
More drastic approach is resetting the router which I recommend to reserve as last resort. With information you provided the router seems to be fine and your computer wireless need to be enabled!
good luck!

Have you had a look on the firewall website for a suitable firewall system that compliments windows 7?
I had to download a new one myself when I went from Windows XP to Windows Vista.

Sometimes changing systems means you should also change your firewall, then you'll have the most up-to-date software going. Plus it won't slow your computer down like it doesn't sometimes.
Hope I helped Dr Reed

Check the IP address on the Vista wireless network connection. Make sure that there is not static IP address on the wireless connection. That could be one of the reason.

HP laptop not recognizing Linksys Wireless B Security Key..

The WEP encryption is consist of 10 characters for 64 bit hex, 128 bit hex is 24 characters and WPA is 8 to 63 characters. So it seems that you have a vista computer? The compatible encryption for vista is WPA, sometime using WEP it is not working properly. So I might advise you to access the configuration of your router (192.168.1.1) and change the wireless settings of your router to WPA-Personal.
