If you have a hardware mute button on the keyboard, try pressing that. They usually look like a speaker with either an x beside it or a speaker that has a circle with a slash beside it. It may even be colored red.
The following answer assumes you're using XP, Vista, or Win 7.
If there is no mute button, click the speaker icon on the toolbar and see if the 'mute' box is checked. If it isn't, also use your mouse or touchpad to work the slider on the screen to try and turn up the volume.
Lastly, some Toshiba laptops have a separate hardware volume control on the front, like you'd find on portable radios.
if the little x over the volume bar is still stuck after moving it up you may have to hit the function key (fn) on your laptop and hit one of the F1-F12 KEYS that look like a mute or volume symbol also there should be a mute button on the laptop itself. if all that fails. go to (xp) right click on my computer -device manager-and see if you have a red or yellow x over your sound sound devices (win vista or 7) go to computer, sys prop on the top then device manager. if you see any of htose yellow or red warnings you will need to re-download the audio drivers from acer website Let me know if this helped.
Click the "Start" button on your screen, then click on the "Control Panel." Double click on the "Sound and Audio" icon.
Click the "Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar" option to have it in the lower right corner. Click "OK" to save your settings.
Check your volume icon to make sure it does not have a red-and-white mute button around it.
Move
the mouse click to the volume icon, then right click the mouse. Click
on the "Open Volume Control" option on the pop-up menu. Remove the
check on the mute button under the master control, if it is checked.
Move the volume slider in the master category upward. If you begin to hear sound, then the problem has been resolved.
Click
the "Start" button on your screen, then click the "Run" option to check
your Windows audio service. In the run window, type "services.msc" then
click "OK."
Scroll down the list in the services window, then right click the "Windows audio option." Click on "Properties."
Select
the "Automatic" option under the "Startup" tab, then click "OK." Test
the sound. Try using headphones into the phone jack to test the sound
Click
the "Start" button, then select the "control Panel" to check sound
drives. Double click on "Sound and Audio" devices, then click the
"Audio" tab.
Check
the correct sound default device on your laptop under the "Sound
Playback" option. If you installed other volume drivers on the laptop
and you don't know the correct default, consult your user manual or
contact the manufacturer.

You have not given the make and model of your computer.
Generally the procedure is
Please check at the task bar at bottom right corner of your screen there is no red 'X' mark on the speaker. That means that sound is muted. Right click on it and remove the mute check mark.
It could be that volume tab has been placed at lowest point. Move it up.
If it still does not work,
Right click on My Computer icon on desk top and click on Properties. Select the Devices Tag. Scroll down the List of devices and check there is no warning sign on the sound device. If it is not there there is nothing wrong with the sound device but if it shows a warning sign then click on the properties tab of the device and upload the driver. You may have to insert the the CD om of the Utility drivers which came with your computer.
Depress the volume bottom or rotate the volume knob. When on a Bluetooth phone call, the speaker symbol will mute, but unmute when the call ends. Either rolling the right steering wheel scroll or the volume button on the shifter area will should unmute the radio volume.
Have you tried going into the speaker settings? We'll assume with a new PC you have Vista installed, click the speaker icon on the right side of the tray, and selecting "Mixer" will enable access to volume control for the output devices and for applications.
If no speaker icon is visible To check the volume controls in Windows Vista, click Start and then click Control Panel. Choose Hardware And Sound and then click Adjust System Volume under the Sound section. The Volume Mixer window will open, and you should see volume sliders for Device and Applications. Click and drag the sliders to view the volume level percentages. If the speaker icons show a circle with a red slash, click the icon so the speakers are no longer muted.
Furthermore, you’ll want to double-check all of your master
volume and mute settings.
All audio settings seem to be on but the sound icon above the keyboard stays red.
