I bought a remanufactured toner cartridge (replaces # 310-5400, according to the box) made by Office Depot. After I installed it, following the instructions as closely as possible,* the printer's "error" and "toner low" lights came on and stayed lit. Thinking I had a defective cartridge, I brought it back and exchanged it for another one. But the problem recurred. I know the trouble isn't with the printer -- my old cartridge (made by Dell) functions normally.**
* Note: The instructions call for pulling out the toner seal on the new cartridge, but there doesn't seem to be one. (The illustration looks nothing like the actual product.) Am I missing something?
** Also note: The Office Depot cartridge appears identical to the original Dell
in every respect, except that the printed circuit on the bottom is red
instead of green.
It's the chip (circuit). It's terrible quality control that you would get 2 the same. Lexmark makes the printer for Dell, however some chips are proprietary (Lexmark Only, etc) Interested to know if this is supposedly a universal cartridge . Maybe Lexmark E232, 332, etc.? Somehow they must have mixed up the chip supply in the remanufacturing process, and these are Lexmark chips only???? Just guessing.
Anyway, the chip is the problem. I'd return it and go somewhere else for the compatible, but it's up to you.
*please rate me :)
