Question about Sony KP-46WT510 46" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Three curved lines have appeared approx. 6" up from the bottom of the screen. Is this a simple fix .... maybe as simple as replacing a bulb?

There is a picture .... and it looks great ... but now there are faint curved red lines from top to bottom of the screen.

I have a similar problem and wondered if the same fix would help me. I have 5-6 blue, curved lines from top to bottom of screen about 2-3 inches apart. They can only be seen when the screen is dark or in a dark scene. Otherwise you can't notice it. Should I do anything since it does not appear to be affecting the picture quality? Or is it a prelude of things to come?

Are you saying that the whole picture is gone and all you see on the screen are 3 curved lines near the bottom, or is the picture there but 3 curved lines are over the picture, or is the picture there but the bottom of the picture has curved upeards?

The red screen control is set just a hair too high. If you remove the front plastic cover (under the main screen) and then remove the cover under that, you will see the bottom of the picture tubes and there will be a black box with 6 controls, each with a little white glue on it. 3 of the controls are labeled FOCUS and 3 are labeled SCREEN. On the 3 screen controls, the one in the center is green and it is either the left or right one (I cannot remember which is which) that adjusts red. Simply turn the red screen control down just a little and the faint red lines should vanish. A good idea is to have the set on with the brightness and contrast set at minimum, in which case the picture should be black, and any excess red color with faint lines will be clearly present in the background. When you turn down the red control just enough to remove the red, check if there is faint blue or green and repeat with those colors if necessary. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, have a qualified tech handle it for you. It is a very simple and fast repair so it should not cost too much.

My SOny Bravia 40 inch LCD TV has a vertical line

Hi,

It could be 1 of 4 things:
1. One of the ribbon cables has worked itself loose (Simple Fix)
2. One of the assembly boards maybe faulty
3. The driver board which feeds the panel maybe faulty
4. The panel is faulty

The driver board in the UK costs approx £70 and approx £35-70 to fit it if this is the fault.

All other parts are between £80-160 and approx £35-70 to fit it if this is the fault.

The panel will cost approx 50-75% of what the TV was worth when you bought it - "Repair versus Replacement"

Thanks

Curved blue lines on screen.

You have a completely different problem. The screen voltage for the blue picture tube is slightly too high on your set. This will put fine lines in the background of the picture, called retrace lines. This is very common and easy to correct. Remove the front speaker cover and the access panel behind it. Look inside and you will see a black box with six controls, each control having a little white glue on it. This is the Focus/Screen block. Three controls are labeled Focus and three are labeled Screen. The screen control in the center is for green but I am not sure if the screen control on the left or right is for blue for your model. With the TV on, set it to VIDEO 1 but do not connect anything to the VIDEO 1 jacks. This will produce a pure dark picture, showing any faint lines in the background. Choose one of the screen controls and increase (turn clockwise) it slightly. If the blue lines do not get brighter it means you are turning the red screen control, so put it back where it was and choose the other screen control. When you find the blue screen control, decrease (turn counter-clockwise) it until just when the blue lines are gone. If you want you can check that the red and green screen controls are set to just below the point where their faint lines are visible. When done, replace the panels and your picture will be back to perfect.

I have a big screen with three lines at bottom of screen

Likely to be the convergence power supply module. If you fix yourself it is simple provided you can get the module. Take the back off AFTER unplugging set The module is located above the main board on the left and the dynamic convergence board on the right. and come out by about 4 quarter inch nutdriver screws and has only two plugs one on each end of the module. You may find a good used one at your local tv shop or get them to order a new one or fix the existing module by changing the chip on it where the metal heat sink is. Chip number is STK 730-010 or STK 730-130. Either will work. Chip will usually fix it. If not the entire module must be replaced

Green horizontal lines across screen

try adjusting the green screen control. remove the front bottom panel of the tv by removing any screws holding it in place. gently pull of the front panel, there are gromets holding it in place, you will be able to gently remove the front, just make sure you get all those screws. now reove the small wodden or plastioc panel. now you will see the screen/focus assy. check to see of the screen controls are the top 3 or bottom 3. adjusted the center screen it's the green one, the other 2 are the red & blue. it is best to adjust in a dark room where the lines will show up easier. good luck
