Inspiron 530 sound distortion

I have a Dell ''Inspiron 530'' with integrated sound. I have tried two sets of speakers and the sound, sounds distorted - kind of like a blown speaker . . . short of trying a third pair of speakers, I am wondering if I just shouldn't buy a sound card? -- thoughts?
By the way, my current speakers are ''Altec Lansing Vs2421 2 Piece With SubWoofer 2.1 Music & Gaming Speakers''

    jerry6185 . . .
    Realtek High Definition Audio
    Driver Date 1/24/2008
    Driver Version 6.0.1.5555
I went into the Realtek Sound Manager and set both the sound effects and equalizer to NONE . . . it sounds much better . . . I suppose a few more tweaks might do it . . . still . . . I would think that I should be able to get better volume from the Altec Lansing speaks I purchased. I have a Toshiba notebook that I plug my headphone jack into a set of Dell desktop speakers with a subwoofer that are about 3 years old that sound better than my desktop with $50 speakers. Perhaps trsrhntr has got an angle I could approach . . . but I don't believe there is a preamp setting anywhere - does anyone know - with the hardware I have?

sorry about the "Posted by Guest on Mar 26, 2009" of my previous additional comment . . . didn't know what I was doing -

    SOLVED!

After looking at the settings in the Realtek Sound Manager I discovered I had the speakers set to 7.1 - I changed it to stereo and things are much better . . . thanks jerry6185 for the idea of looking in the RSM - I haven't had the 530 but a few months and the sound has been giving me trouble since day 1 - but things are better now - thanks again.

What kind of integrated sound card do you have?? I am going to assume its realtek. Go to control panel, then open up RealTek HD Sound effect manager and make sure the drop down menu for Environment is on "none". The try your speakers.

This will happen if the volume output is too high for the speakers. Driven too high on speakers not rated at high enough wattage will sound distorted. Also check the impedance of the speakers. If your speakers are 4 ohm and you need 8 ohm no matter how good they are they will sound distorted.

Where can you find impedance information? I'm using the speakers (including woofer) I had for my Dell Dimension 8100 on my new Dell Inspiron 737, but the volume is weaker. I've wondered if I have an impedance mismatch between old and new computers. How do I find out?

You may need to update the software drivers. Make sure you computers automatic updates are on. To see the status of the drivers, go to start, control panel, and sound. There is a drivers tab at the top. Click the link that says check for updates. Hope this helps.

Speakers may be blown. Try another set of speakers on the computer or try the speakers on another computer to isolate the problem.

actually the harddrive could also be the problem, because when you do have a problem with your HDD your computer tend to intermittently hangup or freezes that causes the distort effect on the sound system. Also you could try using your speaker on a different computer or plug it on an mp3 player so that you could eliminate the factor that your speaker has the problem and if not try using another HDD for your computer or worst case scenarion would be changing the motherboard of your computer.

Distorted sound from new Dell desktop

1. In most cases the problem maybe due to the powersupply. If the filter capacitor or the diodes are not working properly in the power supply, it could give the distortion sound. Use a different powersupply to see if it solves the problem.
2. The mic wire can also catch some hissing noise sometimes. Disconnect the mic wire from the motherboard and see if it solves the problem.

Thanks
