Re: Zen Xtra

I can do it for $40 I have done it on several before. I only use 3 year warranty drives. Thats $40 plus the shipping both ways about $10 and the cost of the drive which is $76. The Drive is Brand New Western Digital and has a 3 year Warranty. I guarantee all my work. Use the link below and email me.

My nomad zen jukebox is stuck in rescue mode and still not working correctly

If you can boot into the Recovery Mode menu, run the Disk Clean-Up option from there. As long as your drive isn't physically damaged, it should be able to fix your problem.
> You can try the "Clean Up" option in Rescue Mode. - let it run for a few hours, and then try to reformat. if that dosnt resolve it then you know its almost gone.
If the hard drive is mechanically damaged (as it most likely is - the drives used in the Zen Xtra are rather fragile compared with current drives),As for recovering the files from your existing drive then the only possible way to retrieve the data stored on it is to utilize a Data Recovery Service but it will cost you a lot except if still under warranty
you can only replace the hard drive Taking the Zen Xtra apart is rather easy - two screws on the back, and that's it. The Zen Xtra uses a standard laptop hard drive, so it'll be easy to locate and install a new one - just be sure the new hard drive you install has a current rating equal to or less than the current rating for your existing drive. To remove the hard drive, you'll need to pop off the front cover, remove the battery, and remove the four broad-head screws that retain the hard drive in place. Then carefully pry the top end of the hard drive out, and pull it away from the case, pulling from the top end.
When you install the new hard drive, you will need to re-install the firmware.

Zen Xtra Error Message When Creating Playlist

The only solution I know of is to reformat the hard drive. It's pretty time-intensive, but it does work. I use Notmad to back up the playlists. Once restored, they all work, even the ones that had initially failed.

I've never had the problem on my 60GB Zen Xtra (non-upgraded hard drive), only with my 120GB, so my naive guess is that the problem may be caused by the machine somehow not handling the extra hard drive space properly.

Also, both times it's happened, I've seen a warning sign: I usually have a lot of stuff loaded into "selected music", and when I add another album or two it partially clears the selections. And it does so in a weird way: only a few selections remain visible, yet it keeps playing at least some of the now-invisible selections.

I'm starting to think it's time to switch players, and maybe get something I can put the Rockbox OS on.

My Nomad zen xtra 40gb is stock !!!

It sounds like the hard drive may be damaged. Have you tried to put it in recovery mode?

Put a paperclip in the reset hole while holding down the play button until you see the screen go to recovery mode. Then try the format option; this will erase all your files but it will tell you if you need a new hard drive.

Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra firmware problems on Windows Vista

Find an XP computer with WIndows Media 10 only nothing higher. If you can't find a computer like that uninstall any WMP newer than WMP 10 and then reinstall WMP 10. There is a bug in WMP 11 and its just best to avoid this until you have upgraded your firmaware to 2.x. If you don't have the newer firmware 2.x download it. Now click on the firmware  program then on your Zen Xtra select Load OS when prompt to connect the USB cable going to your computer. It should see your Zen now and should pop up that stupid window that you need to scroll at the bottom and click agree to get rid of then your Zen should reboot a few times don't touch it!! It will tell you when its done. If you can't get it to see your Zen try plugging and unplugging the USB cable. The best way is to do a fresh install of Window XP SP1 and install noting but WMP 10. You also can d/l the 1.x firmware then load it then load firmware 2.x then just agree with everything and it should work. I have upgraded and updated 6 of these Zen Xtras. Anyone that want a 120G Zen Xtra I am on Ebay: cheap-xbox-drives
I also can do upgrades to your existing Zen Xtras Players.

Jukebox Zen Xtra 40 gig

You probably have Winders Media Player 11. If you can find another computer that has WMP 10, you can use that computer to do the firmware upgrade, then go back to the original computer. Thingsa should work fine. Otherwise, you need to unistall WMP 11 and WMP11 runtime. Another case of Billy messing us up. And don't even get me started about vista....
