Memory card locked

Just got a canon sd750 last week, working fine and then today it started displaying message 'card locked'. I checked the card and it is not in the lock position. Even tried a different memory card and still saying card locked! Any suggestions?

- I have a Canon PowerShot A720 IS that is about 6 months old. When I try to take a photo there is a message on my screen that says "card locked!". I know that there is a lock on the card so I made sure that it is in the unlocked position and I even tried another card. I noticed in my tools settings that I can not use my Format. When scrolling down the list the camera skips over the Format command. I also reset all settings on my camera to see if that would fix the issue but it did not help. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I am going a long trip and must take a camera that work. Thanks in advance.- darandgary08

hi this is to tdiddy your right i was having all the same problems and couldnt understand it however did what you said and it worked!! on mine it was a tiny grey button at the side which moved up and down. couldnt believe it was that little thing causing all the trouble.

I had the same problem and it took me forever to figure it out! On my memory card there is a tiny slider that slides up and down. Mine was slid to "lock" I just slid it back and it was no longer locked! Sounds simple enough now that you know, huh?

I just got back from the store . Our canon said card locked and we tried the tape and another card . Solution was , get a smaller memory card . I had to down size from a 4gb to a 1gb and it went to work

On my card the slider had broken off, and so was always seen as locked.

1) The locking switch on the card might have moved. If so slide it away from the square end of the card toward the end with the electrical contacts.
2) The switch inside the camera maybe stuck. If the switch in the camera is stuck (like mine was) you can tap it with a piece of plastic or blow on it. Just a piece of sand or lint in there can cause this problem. More info at

I had the same problem, but it wasn't just the position of the slider. In either position (on two different memory cards) the camera still read the card as locked. The solution that worked for me: A little piece of tape over the slider side of the card so that both positions were covered by tape (see link for example pic: http://www.camerahacker.com/Forums/DisplayComments.php?file=Storage/memory_card_locked)

Usually card lock just refers the card itself. Just pull the memory card from the computer and look on the side of the card. Is there a little sliding switch> If so slide it to the other position and see what happens when you put the card back in the camera.

I have a Canon Ixus 750. I was recently given a 4GB sandisk extreme 111 card.
The camera recognises the card but shows "MEMORY CARD ERROR". I have tried to find a resolution to this problem and also spoken to canon who cannot resolve the problem.. Is there a firmware fix or is there some other way to resolve the problem. Have tried formatting but to no avail.

Camera won't work, says, "CARD LOCKED." Can't take a picture. Was working fine then, out of nowhere, it reads, "Card Locked," and puts me at a standstill. I took card out, tried to "clean" it, tried to reset my menu, and nothing. Help!

Same thing.....Card locked! I've tried everything, the card lock slide, a new card, off and on, messed with all the settings! UGH! I've always loved the Canon but this problem is not ok. Please help!

last time camera used, everything fine. just attempted to take pictures and it refuses with message "card locked". I have removed and replaced card several times...messsage remains. I tried a different card that I use also and get same message. checked menu for perhaps a message. Have check manuel for this subject...nothing. Is camera malfunctioning or has some setting been changed??

I have a Canon Powershot A610. I'm getting the "memory card error" message when I try to format my SD 8G card.I know about locking and unlocking the card and have tried to format in both positions, but I can't get rid of th error message. Any ideas????
