I have a 5hp snowblower, must be about 12 yrs old, never any problems in the past just did my maintance. the past week I found the engine would die out when auger/impeller engauaged but ''not'' underload. Hold lever down and it stalled. Yesterday it did the same, so I changed the drive belt, seemed to help, but the snow was heavy so it did stall out numberous times. I checked the oil and found it was low so I changed the oil. I finished cleaning the yard and before putting blower away when I noticed oil residue on the driveway, checked and it seemed to be wet at the bottom front by the pulley area. Engine still seems to be running fine on high, bit rough on low before shutting down. checked oil this morning and level seemed good (between the marks) (floor not covered)
I have not solved the problem yet, however, at this point I am thinking it may just be a crankcase vent problem. Builds to much pressure and stalls and that is also the cause of the leak??? I used the blower again today and when I took out the dip stick there seemed to be a pressure.
I had listed my problem as a lawn mower cause the snowblower wasn't in your list of options to pick from??

Take it back to the oil change place. Or check the oil. If a seal is leaking or oil filter was not tightened or put on correctly oil may have leaked out and you will blow your engine!
Is is there any oil leaking in garage or driveway or where you park?
Check all connections for air leak including the water drain valve with soapy water. If no air leaking from connections, spray soapy water on head area where head attaches to the cylinder checking for gasket leaks. If no leaks are found, most likely problem is in the head /valves /internal gasket leak. If head gasket or valves are leaking, you will notice that air seems to blow out of the intake filter (normally there is good suction at the intake). Good luck
Leaks are normally from bad seals or ones put on engine wrong. Many snow blowers leak oil, very common. Electric start needs to be taken apart. Rust is problem most likely. When you engage the starter it kicks out the gear to turn over engine. Carefully remove the starter from engine, try to start starter an if the pinion gear does not kick out from starter disassembly it an try to clean rust away from action. Dont break wires around electric motor careful about getting dirt an rust in winding. Try to lube spring an moving parts around gear. One other thing it could be a sheared off gear on starter also.
No that should just be your transmission for self propelled. Most likely belt driven off motor, with level connected to cable to select drive. . Probabaly a seal leaking on the driveshaft. You could either try and replace seall or replace transmission
Look for signs of oil and you will have found the leak. Compressors depend on the cool gas returning to help cool the inner motor. At 12 pounds to recharge and leak detectors that measure less than .5 Oz per year leak rate does not figure that the leak can't be found. 10% of the oil from the compressor circulates with the refrigerant. The gas leaking will dissipate but the oil at the leak point will still be evident.
