Toshiba external hard drive 640Gb appears on my laptop the USB connects perfectly ,it opens but doesn't take in any file .

hello, i would advice you to format your external hard drive by write clicking on it and click on format and click on start to begin, if this does not allow you to still put files on your external hard drive, then insert it on a friend laptop and see whether you can move files to it. I hope this helps. Regards

I have an i-rocks 3.5 usb/firewire combo external hard drive that seems to be malfunctioning. When i turn it on, it doesn't boot correctly and my computer doesn't recognize it. It continues to make this...

The clicking isn't a good sign; it means the drive is being repeatedly told to start rotating but it either can't start or come up to speed. There is a problem called 'stiction' meaning that the head(s) are somewhat 'glued' to a disk surface. Haven't heard of this problem in recent years but it still may be possible and not as likely with the extreme shrinkage of head size..
BTW, the actual drive probably has a different name and model number but would have to be removed to see the label.

I have a new laptop IDE HD drive and a MadDog USB

As long as the hard drive is powered up and connected to the computer via USB cable it will show up under the "Computer Management".. Go to the control panel and click on "Administrative Tools", then on "Computer Management", now click on Disk Management in the left pane. You drives will appear in the middle pane. Scroll down until you see the drive. In the upper pane it may say something like usb drive etc., look below for it in the bottom pane. If it says that it is offline or it has not been initialized, you can right click on the name where it sayd "Disk 2" or whatever number the computer gave it and click on "Initialize". Now the computer may recognize the fact that the drive has not been initialized and give a prompt to do it and start up a wizard to help you along. Now if the drive is already initialized and it is just unallocated spece, then right click in the area to the right of the disk number and select make a new simple volume. Follow the prompts in formatting, it will only take a minute to complete. Make sure you click on fast or quick format. If you are using a MAC, make sure to format the drive to FAT32, if you are using it for a PC, then format it NTFS.

Looked all over my compaq and cant find my seagate 500gb xt hard drive

the hard drive even though it might be mentioned to be external is still inside the casing of the laptop and can only be seen if you open the laptop completely.

Google the model numbers of the drives to compare specs like transfer rate and access time before you get too frustrated!

Hard Drive not mounting

Check the jumper on each hard-drive.

My guess is that the WD drive has the jumper in the "correct" position, for mounting inside an external case, while the other drives have their jumper set to an "incorrect" position.

Set the jumper to MA(ster), not to SL(ave), nor to C(able)S(elect).

Files disappearing on external hard-drive (nexstar.3)

In this case you should use data recovery software to try recovering the files and data, provided those lost data are not fully overwrtten.

Be careful: Before your files are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the external in case the original files are overwritten.
