Question about Sony Handycam DCR-DVD105 DVD Camcorder

1 Answer

Finalization I wish to finalize a DVD-R disk for the first time. The manual tells me to choose a "style" (style 1 or style 2, etc). The manual does not appear to explain what "style" is or which style is proper to choose under what conditions. Please help ! Much thanks, Zvika

1st of all, thank you very much for your quick reply and explanation.

I have filmed many (many) short clips in one DVD disk. I now wish to FINALIZE. This is the 1st time I am doing this so do not understand what style to choose. When I playback clips on the Camcorder screen, I indeed get a choice of 6 scenes. Do I understand correctly then that I should choose "STYLE 1" when I "finalize" ?

    Much thanks,

Hi Zvika, when you play back the DVD on your home player you can choose to have a "menu" that will display when you load the disk to enable you to select which part of the recording you wish to view. It is like on a commercial DVD where you can choose the scene you would like to see. These menus are available in different "styles", as you see in the style options you can have different numbers of mini "windows" with a snapshot of what the scene you recorded was. If you have recorded many short movies then it is a good idea to have many "windows" to choose, or perhaps it is only one long recording you made in which case you may not want a menu (style) at all! In the example in the manual "Style 1" has 6 "windows" for you to choose when the DVD is played back. I hope this make some sense as it is difficult to explain unless you have done it before! Please update the question & let us know if the information given was useful to you - Good Luck!

Yes that is probably your best option.
When you have the DVD you can load it on your PC and use some video editing software to re-author it and edit just the scenes you want at a later date.

    Best regards,

I just can't figure out how to finalize

Are you referring to finalization of a DVD? If so, the manual tells you exactly where to go in the menu and what to do to accomplish this.

If you do not finalize the disk it may not be playable on another machine.

How can i finalize after just a few minutes recording

As long as there is sufficient space on the disc to store the finalization data. Press Setup, then select Disc Edit (up/down arrows) and press OK. Then choose Finalize and again press OK. You will see a confirmation window, select Yes and press OK again. Wait for the finalization to complete.

The manual is available here: . See page 37 for the screen captures.

I hope this helps.

I cannot play burned dvd's from this system in other dvd players becahse I cannot finalize the dvd. How do I finalize?

The recording may have used all the media on the disk because you let it run until it was full.
Now, there is no room to finalize the disk.

Play this back on the machine where it was recorded while recording it to another DVD recorder..
This time, BE THERE to stop the recording.
Set the recorder to a speed that leaves at least 10 minutes extra space for finalization.

About 5 years ago I transfered some vhs tapes to dvd using a go video vr 3840. I did not finalize the dvd's. I need to buy another vr 3840 to finalize the dvd's. Where can I find one to buy?

You should not need another '3840 to finalize the disks. Finalization just ends the index, makes writing back to the disk near impossible. You should be able to finalize / close the disk using a dvd authoring program (Nero, CD BurnerXP, etc).

The catch may be that the disks that you created are formatted as DVD video, closing a video disk may not be the same.

Another possibility is to use an authoring program (like the above) to copy your un-finalized disks to fresh media, and specify the disks to be finalized (or closed) when completed. I would try this first, the only thing to lose is time, and a disk. Oh, and about 4.7GB of hard disk space to create the image if you only have 1 DVD drive.

Recording from VHS to DVD

First, you will need to know if the program was recorded in XP mode, SP mode, LP mode, or EP mode. To find out how much room there is left, put the dvd in the tray and press the Disc Menu/List button on the JVC remote. This will display the title and how long it is - write that number down. It will also say either "XP,SP, LP, or EP" - write down that mode. In XP mode, a DVD will hold 1 hr and 20 mins worth of prgramming - MAXIMUM. SP mode = 2 hours. LP mode = 4 hours. EP = 6 hours. So, if your program is one hour, and you recorded in LP mode, you have 4 - 1 = 3 hours of space left for recording on that disc.

If you finalize a disc, you will no longer be able to add more programs to that disc, unless the disc is a + or - RW disc. Also note that finalization requires some disc space, so if you recorded a program that is exactly 1hr and 20 mins long, and you recorded it in XP mode, then the disc will probably not finalize correctly.

That being said, the finalization directions are on p. 23 of your manaul: Title --> Finalize --> => --> find finalize --> Enter --> OK --> Enter

Now it will play on other players.
