Question about Zonet PCMCIA 56K V.92 Modem (ZFM5600-CF) (MDMZN5600CF)

1 Answer

Connection speed I have a laptop with Vista Home Premium and a Zonet pcmcia V.92 modem card. I cannot see what the connection speed is. All that is being reported is the maximum connection speed of 115k. This is using the Vista standard V.92 pcmcia modem driver. I live in a rural area and my connection speed varies every time I dialup. It would be very useful to be able to see the speed that I am connected at. Thanks Lee

Thanks for the reply but the problem is that I can't see my connection speed at all.
Under modem properties it shows my maximum port speed as 115200. When I connect to my ISP Vista shows 115.2 as my actual connection speed, every time I connect. This doesn't prevent me from accessing the internet but when I get a really poor connection it is better to hang up and retry.

The usual maximum speed for a v92 dial up modem is around 48-52kbps, although sometimes the way windows calculates the speed can be different, showing higher speeds than is actually possible, hence the 115k that shows when connected. The only way you can get faster download speeds is to download the 'Onspeed' software which compresses pictures etc to enable twice the download speed.

Install drivers for ethernet card or buy a usb to ethernet adapter. That will get you on the net so you can install your other drivers via thinkvantage installer. Or you can just cruise the net with the usb to ethernet adapter itself.

Toshiba 3010 Portage CT network connection options

The RJ11 jack is for connecting to a phone line, your laptop has a built-in phone modem.
You need a network card with a RJ45 jack, there are numerious PCMCIA network card available, there are also USB network devices that you can use. I suggest you use a PCMCIA network card, and leaves the USB port free for other uses.

Unable to use my HSPA USB2 modem with Vista Home Premium SP1, on my laptop

There is a VERY good chance that your USB HSPA Modem is not compatible/complient with Microsoft Vista. There are very few older parts on the market that are compatible.

You can also go to the manufacture web site of the HSPS modem and see if there are any Vista Drivers. If not, then you are out of luck.

Be sure your system meets the minimum System Requirements.
• Standard USB interface
• Microsoft Windows® 2000, Windows® XP or Windows® Vista
• Mac OSX 10.3.7 up to Mac OSX 10.5 32 bit version
• Minimum 50MB of free hard disk space
• Minimum 128MB RAM

• Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher

Uninstall or reinstall SP1. Like Windows XP, Vista will not be reliable until SP2.

If you are using the USB modem via a PCMCIA USB 2.0 adaptor, then you will have a power issue. The PCMCIA cannot supply enough current to properly initialize a USB mode (500mA). You will need to get your self a powered hub or get yourself a HSDPA mobile.

Yes! the error could be the pcmcia modem card.

A PCMCIA Card is used to connect to your laptop different components that you it doesn't have.
More information about PCMCIA
For most ISPs all you need to connect to the Internet is a network card. Check if your laptop has an integrated network card. Then contact your ISP and ask him if you need something else except a network card to connect to Internet.
