Sounds like your convergence modules have gone bad. They have 21 close spaced pins to unsolder and resolder. You'll need a soldering iron with a fine point tip and thin gauge solder to do the repairs yourself. Solder bridges between pins are common when soldering these module pins, so have some unsoldering wick handy if you're going to fix it yourself. The capacitors in the sweep supply and maybe in the main power supply are starting to dry up. Your going to need to get a tech to go over the boards and search out the dryed capacitors. It will take some time and maybe a bit costly. May want to think maybe about a new set? Good Luck

hi, sounds like u need some solder joints re-worked (probably quite a few for a set that old, but your right it`s a great set), price varies by region greatly, I`m in central florida we would charge 75 for service call & 95-125.00 for labor depending on how long it takes to do the solder rework, hope this answers your question, get it fixed it`s waaay better than the new hd (ha ha ha) sets, video-tek

Picture is fuzzy for the first few mins after turning on

This may be an issue with your color wheel where it isn't spinning up to speed at first but finally does after the 2 - 10 minutes. Fairly common in DLP TV's.
This could be fixed by a qualified Hitachi Servicer.

Picture becomes fuzzy and lined, clears with a sharp rap on the top of case.

probably a bad connection on the circuit board inside that heats up over time. the tap on the top probably moves the connection just enough To make it good for short time.

HITACHI 53SBX59B, projection lights don't line up.

It sounds like bad solder connections in the convergence output circuit. It may also be an intermittant convergence output ic which will need to be replaced.

Good Day, alsharp;

I am very sorry about the condition of your wife, I hope she recovers totally and my prayers are with you, your wife and family.

Do not turn TV on, the problem may get worse to the point where the TV may go DOA.

It sounds like you have some poor connections on the TV's convergence IC's. Since, you say that you are handy you maybe able to fix this yourself. If you own a good soldering station / pencil.

The convergence IC's will be located on the right hand side of the TV, looking from the back. They will be attached to a large silver device (heat sink). The IC's have 16 pins on each one, there 2 of them, side by side. Remove old solder and apply new.

I hope this was helpful. E-mail me at mmrkcar@yahoo.com for more info if you need it.

God Bless, big IRISH.

Good Day, hazzletp;
You may have a bad comb filter or one of the CRT's (picture tubes)(cathod ray tube), are going bad. Call an Authorized Service Center and have them come to your home and give you a written estimate b4 repair. Cost AVG $550.00, if CRT is bad go shopping.
Good Luck, big IRISH.
