you may be out of luck. A lot of manufacturers have a product life and once the product life is over they no longer offer support to the product. What this means is they do not make a driver if the product life is over and want consumers to buy a new product. However if you supply the model number and the maker of the scanner one of the many members of fix ya may be able to search for drivers and see if windows 8.1 is supported. I had a cannon LPB810 that went to the tip as I could not get drivers for it and I have a HP scanner with the same problem and it is collecting dust on the desk. I have to take it to the tip as well.
I have the same problem with my Canoscan LiDE 25 scanner used sparingly since purchase in 2008. Last used 3 days back after a gap of a few months when it scanned a few pages and then stopped working. On connecting the scanner to my laptop on Vista Home Premium 32-bit it shows "USB device not recognized". No change in status after uninstalling drivers, cleaning my system, and reinstalling drivers from the Canon CD, or Canon US site, or Canon UK site. Even tried VueScan but this also does not recognize the scanner. I find it hard to believe that a Canon product stops working in barely 5-6 years even though it is very sparingly used and stored in the original packing when not in use.
Sorry, but I have been doing this for many, many years and sometimes... the scanner doesn't work anymore when you lose the disk. I did say sometimes. The HP I have is just like that.
Are you still on ME? Might be time to step up to XP or vista, nevertheless, try this.. works great on my XP pro and Vista with some tweaking, but straight forward with XP Pro. Good luck!
Does it show up in your hardware profiles? What does it say on details when you right click the scanner? When you installed the driver, was it before your plugged in the USB? You may have to uninstall and reinstall it again, this time use the one from HP's website with any patch if applicable. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=sj664en&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=58381&os=228&lang=en If you have successfully used it in the past, follow the install prompts and restart.. instead of using the products software, use Windows included scanning program which is much better than the proprietary one designed by HP. As long as you have the proper driver installed your system will know how to apply it.
Photoshop is not an "advanced" scanning program. To get some "production" and value out of this expensive scanner you need a professional scanning program which also may control the settings of the scanner. Use PixEdit which utilizes the built-in jpeg compression in the scanner. Did a test scanning 10 pages A4 duplex fullcolor. Adobe Acrobat Pro used 4 minutes. PixEdit used 20 seconds. Guess Photoshop (in your version) would also scan uncompressed and not use this good scanner optimal.
