Foggy Picture My TV (1991 Hitachi pTV Model #46EX1B) works excellent except the Picture is somewhat foggy. This could be because previous owners were smokers. A buddy of mine had the same problem with a newer projection TV but was able to drain the coolant and clean off projection lenses and his works beautifully now. Any suggestions?

Dear friend your picture tube has a crack in it! probably in the back of it at the neck, or at the picture tube socket pins. it maybe leaking vaccum and taking on some air! have a local tv shop check the picture tube on a tester!

After moving my hitachi tv to another room,I put it on and the picture is gone negative, foggy and has no colour.

i don;t know. please put it back, hooked up the same way to see if the tv is the problem. if tv is ok, it seems the cable or
connectors may be loose or connected wrong. if single cable, dollar stores sometimes have new long tv cables you could run from original supply to new position to help you locate problem wire or connector.

Foggy picture quality, white too bright

Hello,
This indicates an Automatic Gain Control (AGC) problem often caused by a dried up capacitor. You will probably need a schematic to go much further. This could be a problem in the tuner, IF, or video amplifiers.

The following assumes you are sure the signal source is strong - try a VCR or other local one (channel 3/4, not the RCA jacks).

(From: Glenn Watkins ([email protected]).) Substitute a variable voltage source for the tuner's AGC voltage. Most of the time the range of AGC is from 1 to 7 volts. If you can get a decent snow free picture with an external AGC source, then the tuner is probably OK.

This is will require you to open the back cover of the television alongside an ohmmeter to read components on the printed circuit board of the television..
Take care

Tv turns on with sound but no picture

Check the lamp, that can cuase that condition. If the lamp's glass looks foggy somewhat or it might be broken inside that will be the problem.

Phillips Magnavox 60 inch Projection Tv

That model is famous for having bacterial contamination in the CRT coolant causeing halos, and dim pictures with bad overall color issues. You can look into the lens of the CRTs when the set is laying and if the coolant looks cloudy or has any growth there you will notice it right away, and changing the coolant will restore color, clarity and brightness.

Hitachi 50V500 rear projection tv.

Clean the lenses. This involves taking off the screen, which often involves removing every front panel on the set from the bottom up. Have somewhere to rest your screen, like an ottoman.

Hitachi Projection TV Model 46EX1B

The most common problems I have found in this model is solder joints going out in the vertical and on the driver transformer.

I would say the picture tubes are probably starting to go out by now and the technology is changing.

Look at the new sets. LCD and DLP are using LEDs.

Manufactures are beginning to equip their sets with ATSC tuners that bring in High Def. stations by using a pair of rabbit ears.

In a little over a year most signals must be High Definition and the government is supposed to send out checks for about 40.00 to help fray the costs of converter boxes to convert the older set.

So, my thoughts are, the set is about 17 years old. The cost of repari and the repair itself would be like putting a bandaid on it.

Capacitors by now are beginning to dry out and solder joints are starting to open up, not to mention that the picture tubes are getting weak and changing luminance and fading..

Most sets I repair at this age have future repairs.

  Check out the new technology.
