CD-ROM Drive Randomly Flies Open??

Okay, I am a computer geek myself, I'm pretty tech savvy so what ever information you give me I will probably understand it. The thing is, I have a Compaq Sempron that gets to be quite a pain sometimes. Anyways, some nights I'll be sitting on the internet or something, and then VSSSHHHH!! I'll look down and the CD-ROM drive will be open at random. It's really creepy, but it does it a lot. I don't mind that it comes open as much as the fact that it won't close easily. I can push it shut...and then I'll hear this idiotic, grinding/squealing noise, and then it will shoot back open again. It does this sometimes when its opened voluntarily by me as well (won't shut). Any suggestions? I thought that it might be an I/O conflict or something. Any help would be appreciated :) Thanks

If your computer is running kind of sluggish, you can fix it with an easy clean up of your registry. Here's a link to a free scan that works well:
I've used this one and it sped up my computer by quite a bit. Hopefully this helps.

Re: CD-ROM Drive Randomly Flies Open??

It's a sign that your cdrom itself is failing, it normally happens on boot up, when the drive will automatically open by itself. It is the drive/firmware; as the drive no longer responds correctly to open or cl;ose commands.

I have a inspiron 530s series hard drive and my cd-rom has no power to it

You must open the case, then check the power cable that leads to the cd-rom drive. It should be pretty easy to identify the male/female Sata power plugs. If the cable is not plugged in, plug it, then start the machine to see if the drive works. If the drive is plugged in but still has no power, you'll have to acquire a new cd-rom drive.

The computer won't boot Windows 7. It starts up fine, with the fans running with the LED lights on. Then I get an error message: "CD-ROM Boot Priority ..No Medium" I have checked the bios of...

It sounds like either Windows 7 did not install properly or you have a bad hard drive. I did some research on similar problems and most people have also tried to change the boot priority with no luck. If your are tech savvy I would try to run hard drive diagnostics and possibly reinstall Windows 7. If you are not very technical I would suggest taking it to a competent pc repair technician.

The problem is not with this computer, It's with a dell laptop and it is not mine, the trouble with it is the CD\DVD driver never worked since it was new and the fried did not know anything about computers...

First, I would try an external cd rom and see if it works. If it does then that means that the drivers or the drive itself is bad. If there are drivers for this drive then try to install them. If it did not come with drivers (most of them don't only the older ones) then replace the cd\dvd drive. It's pretty easy to do but you have to take the machine apart. Usually it's a matter of taking the keyboard off (the screws for the cd rom are found under the keyboard) removing the two screws that hold the cd/dvd rom drive on and applying a little pressure on the drive to remove it. Perform the opposite operation to install the new one. The new drive will run you around $30 - $35 or less if you can find one on ebay.

Start by going to (I'm assuming Windows XP) My Computer->Manage and then selecting Device Manager Under DVD/CD Rom devices, see if you have any yellow exclamation marks. We need to make sure all of your devices are "seen" by the system and that the drivers for them are installed.
Note: DELL usually has their own drivers, so you would need to go to the DELL support site and get them. I would recommend doing this to start and get everything up to date.

The best bet and I have had several customers bring systems in with this problem is you have to edit the registry file and get rid of the upper and lower registry values once you do this save and reboot the machine it is just like a new drive was installed worked on all of theres one however came back to me twice and it turned out it was a conflict with other installed hardware. Hope this helps If you simply go to and type clear upper lower registry values and the name and model of you drive as above it usually gives you a step by step and happy computing. How to do emachine recovery

emachine recovery is pretty much the same as on all pc's. Make sure your cd rom is set to auto play and the recovery process will start as soon as you insert the cd. If autoplay is not turned on, put the cd in, open my computer and scroll to the cd drive. You will see a file either called setup.exe or install.exe. Click on that file and it will bring up a screen giving you all available options.

Click on the start menu in the lower left corner of your display.
Click on "My Computer".

A window similar to this one will open and you will see your CD/DVD drive.

If double clicking the drive does not open the CD, right-click the symbol with your mouse and choose "Play" or "Open".

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

If this happens with all your CDs and everytime, I would suggest you should replace your CD Rom Drive with a new one. After use of some years CD Rom Drives have such problems. Otherwise a software might locking your drive. you should find a tool which unlocks the drive and then press the eject button.
