Canon Speedlite 580EX Fault

At switch-on the flash head vibrates back and forth as if the gun is searching for its zoom position. This lasts for about 5 seconds then the zoom indicator on the LED starts to flash.

580 ex zoom does not work properly and make a noise

Hello,
When you manually zoom does it make the sound, or on the camera? One thing to try is change out the batteries, maybe there is not enough juice to work as needed. If doing that does not help, then I would contact Canon; the flash may need repair.

Is not working properly

A good possibility is the zoom head is causing the clicking sound. As we zoom the flash, the inside of the head moves to the back and forward. Gently tap it a few times see if that helps. My guess is it needs servicing.

Zoom flashing

This will come on if you manually activated it on the back of the flash. It's for the times when you want to manually provide wide or tele coverage.

SPEEDLITE 580EX TTL Flash: flash is making a constant beating/clicking noise ...

Loosen the two small screws under the flash on the swivel head. Turn flash on. You may need to twist the head just slightly. Flash bulb moves back and forth in the swivel head when zooming. If you dropped the flash, this may have jarred it from the track. I had the same problem with mine, and the above solution fixed it. Zoom works again and no clicking noise. Let me know.

I have a Canon Speedlite 580EX, the flash will not go off.

Perhaps the unit is set to master/slave mode. Look into that.

hint: Press and hold on the zoom button to get into the master/slave menu
