My thinkpad monitor is going out. When the laptop is moved of if the left corner is hit, or has a little pressure is put on it the screen will go out , or the screen will start having lines in it. Also the cursor will have a box around it and it will move where ever the cursor goes. I hooked the lap top to another monitor and the other monitor done the samething.
I have the exact same laptop and issue with the screen going out or locking up (w/the lines as you described). Here's the bad news... this started happening to mine a few weeks ago and I had a few different people weigh-in on the situation (locally) including one person who examined the inside. Unfortunately (unless you can find an obvious loose connection/wire) it IS likely to be a video card gone bad, and (what's worse is) the video card on the T41 is integrated with the motherboard. Replacement cost (1000+) is, therefore, probably more than the laptop is worth. The other bad news is that it will get progressively worse, so (while you may be able to tolerate it for a while) you'll need to get all of your files off it as soon as possible. Mine will still turn on every once in a while, but is definitely no longer reliable.
Unlikely, but I wonder if this issue is well-documented enough (as a "defect") that IBM would consider a recall.
sounds like you your video card might be loose or have a bad connection try this power down take the battery out remove the video card and reinstall it but be careful i would not recommend doing it on carpet or anything that can cause static. and if that dont fix it video card might be bad bob
I had the same issue, because of the lose screws on the edges, eventually the small piece on the motherboard got damaged. Believe me I opened my laptop many times and examine the motherboard. I finally found the small and black component's connection which was lose sometimes it works if I push the one side when I turn it on.

Have Thinkpad t41 running XP Professional. Trying to connect to netzero dialup. Get a 633 modem or other device already in use. Not sure if this is a problem but the Ethernet indicator light is always solid yellow with nothing connected to the port. Have another lap top that I can connet to net zero using the same phone cable. No Ethernet lights are on. Netzero properties shows the Agere Systems AC 97 modem is using Com 3. When I look at device manager it only shows LPT1 & Com 1. The computer that connect also only shows LPT 1 & Com 1, so not sure thats a problem. Any help appreciated! Don

I had this T41 for 4 years. The only thing I've changed is an additional 512MB memory which was installed 3 yrs ago and hasn't brought any problems. All the other parts are untouched. The keyboard did get tortured by a few times of coffee spilling, but it survived. Recently my T41 had start to halt (being unresponsive to keyboard and track point actions) during running Windows XP, and then got back to normal. Starting from last week, it won't start and halted at the BIOS start screen. Then in the rare case it did get through, it would halt often while running Windows. I suspect it is due to the keyboard and the track point, but not sure. Could anyone give me any suggestions how to solve it? Thank you very much.
