Can't get the cartridge to a position to clean

This printer was given to me. I suspect that it only needs a good cleaning as mine did. I don't have any manual and I need to know how to get the cartridge to a position where I can remove it and clean under it to get it operational again. I have a flashing green and red light. I have tried holding down several buttons while turning on the power. Please help me as I was going to donate this printer to a young student who is in need of it. Thank you

THE PRINT IS NOT CLEAR

A technique to improve print quality is to try and clean the cartridge nozzles. You may clean the cartridge by following the steps given below:
1. Go to the "Lexmark solution center." This can be done by clicking on "Start," go to "Programs" and Lexmark printer group. Click on the "Lexmark Solution center." Next click on the "Maintenance" Tab.
2. Select "Clean and Fix Horizontal streaks." Click on "Print". This will produce a printed page.
The colors that you should see here are black, yellow, magenta (a reddish purple) and cyan (a dark sky blue). You should notice the diagonal lines above and below the solid horizontal lines. These diagonal lines should be solid from left to right with no gaps.
If there are gaps in the lines or the print diminishes across the page, you should run the "Clean Print Nozzle" page a couple more times to try and clear it up. If you still have gaps at the top and bottom, you should "wick" the cartridges by following the steps given below:
1. Please open the "Solution center" again and go to the "Maintenance" Tab.
2. Select "Install color/black cartridge" and remove the cartridge or cartridges from the printer.
3. Get a damp paper towel.
4. Set the ink cartridge right side up on the damp paper towel so that the ink nozzles are against the towel and hold the cartridge in this position for about 15 seconds.
5. Now wipe the print head (on the bottom where the ink comes out) across in one direction only (left to right) until it looks clean.
6. Next dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure that the ink is flowing.
7. Snap the cartridges back into the printer.
8. On your computer, select "Old Cartridge install."
9. Repeat the "Clean Nozzle Page" one more time. If this fails to address the problem the entire procedure may need repeating.

Good Luck!!!!

I have put in new set of catridges in my HP 1600. The red color is fading and not giving good results. I need to know how can i fix this. Please!

After replacing the cartridges it's always a good idea to run a a calibration,
that step and a few others are covered on HP's Print Quality troubleshooting page.

Here it is for the 1600

Also one other thing you can try that they don't mention is,
using a clean lint-free rag you can try cleaning off the "Contacts" for each cartridge.

If you look at the cartridges you should see (usually) some small square or rectangular
pieces of metal and at the same location on the printer itself is some other pieces of
metal that touch those points when the cartridge is installed.
If there's any toner or debris on those contacts and the machine isn't able to get a solid
electrical charge to the cartridges it could also cause a problem.
(This doesn't ALWAYS help so I would focus more on the steps in their troubleshooting page)

Did this help you? Don't forget to leave me a positive review if so! Good luck. :)

Printer will not print red. The red cartridge seems fine, with ink flowing freely, but it won't print onto the page.

its the problem of print head in your printer. You are not the only one facing this problem there are many other users facing this same problem.in canon printer users out of 10 users ---- 8 users face this problem.
Now I will explain the problem
In the printer where you insert the cartridges is called carriage.in the carriage there is a part called PRINT HEAD. In the print head there are tiny – tiny holes from where the ink passes.when you insert the cartridge in the carriage /head of the printer the ink from the cartridge passes from the head.but if the head is got blocked then the ink will not pass from the head and you get no print out still with the new brand cartridges.now in the printer there is a in built cleaning assembly , so when you give the command of cleaning from your pc/laptop the inbuilt cleaning assembly tries to clean the blocked ink in the tiny holes of the head.but if the ink is got stuck up hard the cleaning assembly in the printer does not have that much power to clean the ink in the head.the other procedure to clean the head is a manual cleaning.in this procedure the head needs to be removed from the printer by disassembling the printer.but in this case out of 100 only 4 to 5 heads gets cleaned and start working but that also don’t last long.its not any guarantee that how much the manually cleaned head will work.
In some cases it has been seen that ink gets used only in cleaning but after inserting new cartridges the printer starts working.if you have inserted new cartridges in the printer and still don’t get any printout then its advisable that you go for any other brand printer.hp is the best brand of printer. Or the other option is you take the printer to local printer repair shop to get the head manually cleaned if you at present don’t want to invest in new printer.a repair center have some special tools to clean the print head its 50 ---- 50 Chance.you can try that first.
This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya

Newish cartridge, PM say's it's empty

These types of cartridge problems usually occur when the printer hasn't been cleaned. We all tend to neglect cleaning the dust out of our printers and even a small amount of dust can clog an ink cartridge. You should go ahead and change it and clean the printer real good inside the way the manufacture suggest cleaning it. Good Luck.

sounds like there's something stuck under the cartridge, or the 'compatibility' is suspect..that's the only reason that happens, a mechanical mismatch

Flashing exclamation mark

Yea this just happened to me today. Fortunately, all I needed is to clean the color cartridge. Grab a towel and wipe the bottom of the color cartridge throughly. After, put it back in and it should work.

Clean it good, make sure it's definitely cleaned. I had black smudges on mine and had to take it all off b4 it worked again.

Printer makes noise while cleaning heads

Grinding noise is most likely caused by the carriage lock getting stuck and holding the print head at the home position. The noise is caused by the toothed belt that pulls the head back and forth, skipping over the splines on the motor drive wheel. If you have been able to print since the problem occurred, chances are that it has freed itself up and will be fine. Regarding the loss of cyan & magenta output, follow the solution given in my previous posts to complete a manual under-head cleaning cycle. This should get you going. Black will not print

Hi springfield, From what you describe I don?t think it has anything to do with your printer drivers. I would try the following: -Run a couple of nozzle cleaning jobs. -If no change I would suspect a defective cartridge and would try a brand new HP cartridge. If these don?t work I?ll need some more details such as do you refill cartridges, buy remanufactured cartridges or use new HP. Also is this still under manufacturer?s warranty? I don?t want to suggest anything that would void it. Let us know what happens and please don?t forget to rate the posting.
