in my 2004 grand caravan it's behind the glove box and left of the blower motor. disconnect the wires first then remove the 2 screws to pull out the resistor unit. First make sure you have removed the negative of your batterie. I had the same pm that prevented the blower motor to operate in any speed. I hope this will help
SOURCE: 99 cavalier Smoke coming out from under dashboard!
now this may be a long shot... but i had a similar problem on my cutlass. but it wasnt wiring...... it was from the tube running from the head of my engine...... the smell and smoke were coming from hot oil coming out of the crank case vent tube and then being sucked into the air inlet for the heater/ ac.
since a electrical wire's protective cover is petroleum based as is oil.... they smell very similar

I had the same problem at 49,999 miles (no kidding). One mile from warranty expiration. Mazda replaced the condenser and something else that was expensive (under warranty). Still didn't work right. Finally, they replaced the temperature sensor and it worked perfectly. Try the sensor.

Motor is also energized by a relay. check that and also check that the motor itself is good by running a hot lead right to it. I'm sure you already checked the fuse and know the switch is good?
