Kenwood KDC-MP825 car stereo problem

I have a Kenwood KDC-MP825 car stereo. After 3 years of trouble free performance, it is now malfunctioning. When it powers on, the lower panel flips down as normal and begins to operate normally but after 2 seconds, it retracts to a 45 degree angle and the entire panel assembly starts to retract in power off mode then it stops halfway in, powers off and is completely non-responsive. It does respond to resets, but a few power ups after reset, the same problem occurs. I've read about faulty data ribbons and also dirty panel contacts - I hope this is fixable because I love this unit!

Re: Kenwood KDC-MP825 car stereo problem

My wife experienced the same problem this month, December 2008, after owning the KDC-MP825 for 3.5 years (what's up with that?). It would power on briefly, the panel would move, then after 2 seconds it would shut down. After 15 seconds, it would power again, panel motors whir, then shut down. It would keep doing that while the key is in ignition.

This appeared to have solved the problem:
Hold down BUTTON [5], press the RESET button (you'll need a ballpen to press between the AUTO and SCRL button).

This was the procedure for getting the receiver out of demonstration mode. Maybe the cold weather here in New Jersey placed the unit into demo mode?

When i power it on it shuts off i got a kenwood kdc-mp825

Disconnect all of your speaker leads at the head unit, make sure none are touching, then power it back on. If it still cuts out, check your ground, if it doesn't, re-connect speakers one by one and test power again. It will either cut out when you get to a speaker or wire that's shorted, or work just fine. it's protecting itself from damage by cutting off when speakers are either bad or have shorted wiring. Most common shorted wiring happens on door speakers at the hinge. If it continues to cut off without speakers connected and you have a good ground, the unit needs service. If it still plays and you find the speaker or wire that's causing the problem, disconnect the wire at the speaker and test again, if it works, replace the speaker, if it doesn't, replace the wire. Hope this helps

Unlock code

This is the only way to clear the code. You must have the remote to do this, it will not work without the remote. I work at an authorized Kenwood service center and tell you for certain that this is the only way it can be done. If you do not have a remote, you will either need to buy one or borrow one from somebody else who has a Kenwood radio. Most all Kenwood car stereo remotes will work, it does not need to be from the same model number but it must be a Kenwood car stereo remote. If you can not find a remote for this then you will need to take the radio to an authorized Kenwood service center and they will usually do it for a small fee.

The first step is the only part of this procedure that you do not use the remote.

1. During code request mode, press the Track UP key for at
least 3 seconds while holding down the AUTO key. (– – – –
will disappear)
2. Enter, “KCAR” with the remote controller as described below.
• Press the remote controller 5 key twice, and press the Track
Up key. (Enters a “K” )
• Press the remote controller 2 key three times, and press
the Track Up key. (Enters a “C” )
• Press the remote controller 2 key once, and press the Track
Up key. (Enters an “A” )
• Press the remote controller 7 key twice, and press the Track
Up key. (Enters an “R” )
3. Security function is canceled and unit sets to All-Off mode.
4. Code request mode appears if a mistake was made in entering
the numbers.

Kenwood kdc-mp 825

it's a Canadian Kenwood.
I had the 925 purchased from Ebay, but I sold the car with it.
it's probably the ribbon wire broken between the face and the unit. I know that on Ebay some they use to offer a repair for these type of units.
