How do I set or change the margins on my Royal Safari typewriter?

If you are following user's manual instructions to reset the margin and can't, maybe your Royal Safari is defective? Insist trying and if still no luck try to ge a typwriter repairman, a species in near extintion by now.

After typing first line, hit the return key. The carriage would not return to the far left margin...it only moved 12 or so spaces to the left.

The carrier slides on a silver shaft that is about 1/2" thick spray some WD40 on the shaft, if that doesn't do it you have to get some on the carrier motor bearings located under the case in the R. rear corner.

Types only one letter

Press margin release before you hit return then continue typing. You may have set the right margin.

How to set margins

after hitting the return key, the carrier goes all the way to the left margin. If you need the margin to move even more to the left, hit the margin rel key and backspace to the desired position and hit the mar left key. Same for the right margin, use the space bar to move the carrier all the way to the right margin and press the margin rel and move the carrier to the desired position and press the mar right key.

Can't get the left margin to change, it is stuck way over on the right side and when I hit return it goes to about the center of the typewriter

Hi,
On carriage return the machine locates LH margin. In your case the LH margin is set in centre.
Press the margin release key when at the margin location position.
Use the backspace key to return to the extreme left.
Space forward to were you want the new margin.
Press Margin Left set.

Margin settings

You have to hold the magic margin button down while you move the carriage all the way to the left, then release the margin button. Then repeat for thr right margin. Hold the right magic margin button down while moving the carriage all the way to the right, then release the margin button.

Resetting the margins on a manual typewriter.

I can't be for sure if these are auto set margins, but it sounds like they might be. If they are, first move the carriage as far to the right as you can. Hold the Left Margin Set (not Margin Release) lever as you move the carriage all the way to the left. Release the Margin Set Button or Lever. Now hold the Right Margin Set Button or Lever (not the Margin Release), and move the carriage all the way to the right while holding the Margin Set. Once the carriage is all the way to the right, release the Margin Set. Move the carriage to the place you want to set your left margin. Hit the Left Margin Set and then release. Move the carriage to where you want to set the right margin. Hit the Right Margin Set and release it. It gets confusing, but Margin Release does not set margins. Its sole purpose is only to bypass the margins. Hope this helps.
