Sounds like it needs a new power supply. If you are familiar or comfortable opening the case and replacing the power supply then you should be able to find a replacement on-line ($20-$100)Otherwise you will need to take it to a PC repair place.

Power supply could be dead in which case buy a new power supply, unless the motherboard is dead.

Most likely the power supply is dead. Either that, or the motherboard is dead and won't power up the rest of the computer.
If it's the power supply, you can get a new one for about $10 on tigerdirect.com. If it's the motherboard, you might be better of buying a new computer unless you or a friend really know what you're doing in replacing it.

I had just installed Charter Security. It said that it was protected but it was scanning for virus and the computer shut off. I cannot get it to come back on.

You may have a virus, malware, adware, a browser hijacker, or pups (potentially unwanted programs).

A. If your computer will boot and you can operate it ok...

Download and install Malwarebytes and Superantispyware (Note: If you can\'t do the download on your machine, do it on a friend\'s, put them on a thumb drive, and install them from it). Then scan your computer with each program, and quarantine anything found.

B. If your computer won\'t boot, or can\'t operate properly after boot...

Tap F8 when you are booting, select "Safe Mode With Networking". Download and install Malwarebytes and Superantispyware (Note: If you can\'t do the download on your machine, do it on a friend\'s, put them on a thumb drive, and install them from it). Then scan your computer with each program, and quarantine anything found.

C. If this process finds malware, to keep stuff like that from coming back, I recommend you get the paid version of Malwarebytes.

Good luck.

When i plug in computer it won;t turn on, no lights, no fan, nothing,, does that mean it needs a new power supply?

This machine was built for an Operating System that is no longer supported. hackers will be looking for these machines to infect. I recommend you get a newer machine, or don't try to get on the Internet with this one. The hard drive or some other critical component may be failing, or just the OS or hard drive corrupted. If you have files that you do not want to lose, you could try this... Pull the hard drive out, and use a "USB Hard Drive Adapter" (available fairly cheap online) to connect the hard drive to a friend's computer, and save all the personal files (documents, pictures, etc.) you can to a folder on the friend's computer or an external hard drive. That way, at least you may not lose your files.
Good luck.

My computer is making a buzzing noise the fan is working and friend told me it was probably the power supply

I would first try cleaning the computer and removing as much dust as possible from your computer. Also clean the fans, this could be the reason why your fan is working so hard. Just make sure your computer isn't turned on and not plugged in.
