Grinding noise right after starting when car is either in Park or in Neutral. NO noise while on Drive or Reverse; car moves forward or backward ok. Noise some time is on, most time is off.
There are many things to cause this problem. torque converter is most likely expected if its 3.0 v6. notorious for these problems. If you don't know where it is located, it is behind the transmission. you will have to drop it and it is a cylinder. another issue that could cause rough vibration is bad motor mounts.

linkage is off, not starting in park, neutral safety switch maybe bad

I ran into this problem, and discovered that i had a faulty front shaft speed sensor. The grinding I had was that the transfer case clutch packs were trying to lock up and engage the front wheel drive. Replacesment of the sensor has not fully rectified the situation though, as it still does it intermittently. It seems to do it at low speed turns and on acceleration. Not sure if this is your problem or not, but it could be. A scan of the computer can tell you if it is the issue though.

DIsconnext and reconnect the linkage at the transmission. You may want top replace the linkage cable all together. Make sure you set the parking break and block the tires
