Pink diplay when using HDMI cable, okay with component

Using a generic 1080p upscaling dvd (sold under DSE and transonic at various locations) player which displays pretty well using component leads - thought I would try HDMI cable to tidy up etc when connecting to philips 32ta2800 (and yes its HDMI not DVi as some come with)
Displays pinks where black would normally be - player displays fine on other panel - anyone had issue with philips HDMI connections? ( display only 12 months old at most - and used a couple of different leads too which leads me to suspect the TV - anyone had similar?
