With the combination of seal gaps and brown spots (streaks) on your clothes, chances are the front (part # 3406129 ~ $26) and rear (part # 279857 ~ $17) drum seals need to be replaced. Run a rag around the seals and check the marks to confirm this is the problem.
Depending how big the gap is, you may need to replace the drum support rollers if they are worn (part # 349241T ~ $24).
The parts are available at Sears. Labor costs will vary depending on where you live and if you're not replacing them yourself.
Let me know if you need more help or information.
Good luck!

I have a maytag dryer LDE8424ACE. When drying the clothes it leaves black smudges or lines on the clothes.i saw some felt sticking out and I pushed it in, but it still happens. Do I need a new dryer?

The felt seal is part of the drum slide/glide system. If you found part of it sticking out that means somewhere there is a spot where the seal is not glued on properly. Usually that creates a gap that clothes can get stuck in and sometimes ripped. It is probably repairable but depending on the age of your dryer you might want to put that money towards a new one. My guess on the repair cost around $150 depending on service pricing in your area.

Felt seal on back part of drum whirlpool

Felt seal and glue

What I would do is take the dryer apart and remove the old drum seal. Get as much of the old glue off there and install new felt. I tuned upa dryer built like yours not long ago and took some photos.

Brown streaks on flat, thin items like pillow

Hi Witt and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.

The brown streaks are most likely rust. There are drum seal replacement kits you can buy to start anew. The streak source need to be identified. If the drum is rusted your going to have to sand and paint it with an enamel appliance paint. However.... if it is the back of the cabinet that is the source of the rust in the felt seal rub area if you do not allow the paint to dry well before reassembly it will end up flaking off on your clothes.

Here is the drum seal with adhesive:

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/Appliance-Parts/WHIRLPOOL-Rear-drum-felt-seal-with-adhesive--red-thread--item-number-AP3094149.aspx

Once you in there I would replace the belt and inspect the drum rollers.

Belt:

Rollers:

The belt I would replace... Just make sure if you attempt repair that you NOTE the routing of the dryer belt through the idle pulley to the motor pulley.

If the rollers rotate freely with no teetering froward or aft and do not have any flat spots you do not have to replace them.

Dryer is leaving brown streaks on cotton clothes

The 417 dryers have two seals on the front panel, the top seal has drum glides which wear down over time. Because the drum rests on those glides, when it wears down it leaves a gap between the drum and the seal, clothes will drag in that gap and come out with rust and/or seal adhesive stains. Try replacing the top and lower seals, this works most of the time...sometimes though, if left unattended long enough, the lack of support from the front glides causes too much strain on the rear drum bearing, and even after replacing the seals clothes may still catch, although the brown spotting will stop for awhile. You can feel the gap if you run your hand along the inside of the drum at the seal point.

Brown smudges on clothes

Take a look and see if the drum near the door moves up vertically. It shouldn't move more than 3/16ths of an inch. If it does, replace the upper felt seal/plastic slide. The upper seal that supports the front of the drum on the front of the dryer is worn out to the point that clothes can get stuck in the gap between the drum and the front of the machine. This leaves brown wedge marks on clothes. While it's apart, replace the lower felt seal as well.
