Would earth strap break cause a break down?

My car broke down while at traffic lights today, first the stereo stopped working them some other strange electrical issues - random lights lit up and my indicators would ot work. Then when I tried to go into first gear to move off again the engine cut out. It would start again but would just cut out again almost immediately or as soon as I tried to go into first gear. A friend a work then checked it and saw that the earth strap from the battery is broken. He thinks this is all that needs to be fixed to fix the car. Does this sound right? I'm nervous!

Yes, disconnected earth strap (body ground) will cause your car to break down.

SOURCE: Engine cuts off in traffic when car slows.

Sounds like it could be an ignition module breaking down.

SOURCE: "Service Engine Soon" warning light

The "service engine" light come on in about 80% of older cars quite frequently. Usually, it means nothing being related to some emissions component or similar. You can shut it of with a rented (for free,) tool at Autozone. The tool is a code-reader, and can also tell you what the specific cause is, as well as instruct the on-board computer to simply turn off the annoying light. Odds are it'll come back if you don't fix whatever trivial B.S. it is complaining about. Best advice: Unless it's something major, just live with it like everyone else. - Good Luck, John

SOURCE: Car will shut down at

It could be an electrical problem or a fuel problem somewhere, but I suspect the CPS (crankshaft position sensor) is going bad. When this starts going out, the car will shut off at anytime, but it will sometimes start right back up and sometimes a couple of hours. But I will say, if this is the problem it will leave you stranded. Good Luck.

Turned key in ignition got no responce tried connect to ecu unable to respond

With a voltmeter check out the main battery fuse cartridge located in the fuse box usually 3 or 4 of them bolted to fuse box you cant mistake them they are the largest physically in the fuse box , If this reads ok check your Battery Earth strap and Engine earth strap .sometimes the dash lights if these straps are poor but they can not carry enough power to complete circuit.

Nissan pathfinder 2000 with 2 O2 sensor codes repeated after changer sensors what could it be? Scanner says low voltage.

Check grounding straps between engine and body, and transmission and body. Unbolt the straps. Check for internal corrosion , breaks etc. replace if any sign of wear, broken wires etc. scrub clean to bright metal the earthing points on the body, replace satraps in position and tighten down the nuts holding the straps.
Electrickery requires just as good a return earth path to the battery as the feed... Otherwise the voltage can drop on any sensor, e.g TPS etc giving a false signal to the ECU's for both engine and trans (if it is an auto).

1997 pathfinder starts real slow only when warm

Suspect ground or earth return from engine and trans to body. Take off both ends of all earth straps, test for continuity or breaks or corrosion in straps, buy new if there is any doubt, sandpaper to bare metal the earthing points on chassis an d engine, bolt straps on tight, try again.
otherwise starter may need rebuilding....

Break lights on all times????????????????????

Hi

I know you said the switch is all the way out but they can stick internally and will appear that the switch is still out but the small conatct inside will still be down. check that before going any further.

No your right the abs would not cause the brake lights to stop working in any way as it is not connected at all. Check the earth/ground leads from the rear light clusters to the car body, ensure they have a good conatct, shiny metal to metal. check the wiring from the rear lights also.

sometimes people use the wrong bulb in the brake lights and the light connections connect the cluster board as one, basically the wrong bulb can make the lights stay on through contact to an incorrect part of the assembly board for the rear lights.

Alos check the main battery lead black one earth/ground from the car battery to the car body ensure again this has a good contact from the battery to the car body. there will be another earth lead going to the gearbox, check all your earths, as a poor earth can again cause this fault.

Thats quite a bit of information, sorry it's just there are so many things that can cause this fault.

Hope this helps
regards
dan
