I can't get the scanner to be "on". I used it a couple of days ago and it worked fine ... has been perfect for the 2.5 years I've had it. Everything is plugged in and I just finished the driver download sequence. I have in on an iMac for the last year. Could it have "died" on me?
I had a "Doh!" moment the day after posting my problem. As I was packing up the scanner to put it in the attic, I suddenly noticed the on/off switch on the side. I'd never noticed it before. Connecting everything and flicking it to ON made the lights come on and my scanner worked perfectly. I'd recommend switching off at the mains after every use, however, as there is something a bit dodgy about the power supplies.
I had the same problem a year ago or so. The solution was to replace the power cord. I have the problem again even though I haven't used the scanner much in the meantime. I think there's a power trickle effect going on and I should have unplugged the cord from the outlet when not in use.

Make sure you have Adobe acrobat or similar installed so that you have PDF available on the PC. It may also be in the software for the Epson. I had a scanner a few years ago whose software excluded PDF and I ended up installing new software of a generic printer / scanner to use Adobe PDF
Try going to epson.com. Then go to the Drivers and Support page and look up your scanner. The Drivers and Downloads link is one of the first items in the list. I could not find a model 2490 on the site.
You have tired all the computery things seemingly but it is work trying some more Remove all software.- using the EpsonUninstall routine . and just to be sure go to Programs.Epson and mauallydelte all you can find. Make sure that when you re install- the computer is off line and the ant virus program is disabled. That should sort the problem Computer wise. When you go to operate the scanner- does it then go through the motions of Scanning but no light - is that it? If it is - there is nothing for it but to replace ther scanner To bad about the warranty card but if you have the sales recieipt And purchased less than a year ago - the the seller has a responsability [UK wise any way] But a pleading message toiEpson may surprise you too.
