My sony PSP wont play the UMD's at all. I tried cleaning umd drive with qtip, but problem persists. The psp is out of warranty, is there anything that can be done before buying a new psp?

I had the same problem with my psp today. It worked fine the last time i used a UMD disk 2 days ago. When i turned it on this morning, i heard an odd noise. Perhaps the motor waering out. I think i would have heard this sympthom before today though. Anyway, i have had it for almost two years, never dropped always cased. I called Sony and all they can do is charge me 89.00 to send me a replacement(refurb). I could wait and just buy the new slim PSP coming out on Sept.9 but them i would still have a broken PSP. so i gave them the 89.00 bucks and hopefully in 7-10 days i will have a working PSP again.

Go and return this to Sony if it is under warranty or go to a nearby repair shop to fix it. I believe the diode has been damaged from the qtip being used. Those lasers are delicate things.

Same with my PSP. My son accidentally broken a spring sensor for the UMD when you close the UMD cover of the PSP. That's why the drive doesn't recognize if there's a UMD. Sony Service Center here in the Philippines doesn't have a replacement part for this.

Can you run other UMD's and it read them? If so you need to possibly clean the Original UMD. If your not able to read any UmDs, or it will see the UMD and not load it up and run the UMD, you will need a new UMD drive. I can replace your UMD drive for $45 including return shipping.
