I had the same problem with my psp today. It worked fine the last time i used a UMD disk 2 days ago. When i turned it on this morning, i heard an odd noise. Perhaps the motor waering out. I think i would have heard this sympthom before today though. Anyway, i have had it for almost two years, never dropped always cased. I called Sony and all they can do is charge me 89.00 to send me a replacement(refurb). I could wait and just buy the new slim PSP coming out on Sept.9 but them i would still have a broken PSP. so i gave them the 89.00 bucks and hopefully in 7-10 days i will have a working PSP again.
Same with my PSP. My son accidentally broken a spring sensor for the UMD when you close the UMD cover of the PSP. That's why the drive doesn't recognize if there's a UMD.
Sony Service Center here in the Philippines doesn't have a replacement part for this.

If u don't want ur psp to start automatically when turning it on u can change it in the system system settings To run the UMD smoothly yo need to: a) Try cleaning the UMD with a clean smooth cloth gently... b) Try cleaning the psp's umd drive (where the lens is)... c)Put the umd properly in the drive...
Below where the UMD game appears on screen try the button below that should say 'Update PSP'. The game could have an update for the PSP and won't play without it. If this doesn't work contact Sony Website Forums and see if anybody there has had the problem.

Hi Glenpark, Eithr the UMD or UMD laser is dirty. If it will play other UMD's the UMD is dirty. I think Gamestop has a device that helps broken and dirty UMD's. If it will not play any UMD, then you have a problem with your UMD laser. You can try to clean your laser lens. Use a Q-tip. Dampen, not soak, a Q-tip with a window cleaner. NOT Alcohol. Swab the lens thoroughly with the cleaner, then use the dry Q-tip to dry and polish the laser. Try hard to not leave any lint.
