First of all, do not try to use the camera. Most probably some sand has reached the lens mechanism, or, a bit worse, if the camera was dropped too harsh, the mechanism has been broken, or some part was displaced. If the battery can be removed, take it off, then look for a service. The practice in good services here is a minimal tax for diagnostics, which is sometimes even reduced from the end price, if you decide to pay the repair. The only problem is that most often such incidents happen when the camera is needed most, for example on a vacation. For the future, respect more and keep the carrying strap always on your wrist.
I'm afraid that it's a new lens assembly or a professional repair. Unless the camera is still under warranty.
Same thing happened to my Panasonic Lumix. I completely stripped down the camera to see if I could find the offending bit of dust or dirt that everyone online says is the problem. No chance. I tried all the tricks, including banging the camera quite hard on my kitchen table (I was quite frustrated by that point!)
I've narrowed it down to a small motor that controls the lens and consequently the focus part. But you simply can't buy the parts. A professional repair quoted more than the camera was worth so I sold it on ebay for 'spares or repair' and bought a new one.
The 'lens error' problem plagues all of these compact zoom cameras, so unfortunately it's a very common fault and expensive to repair.
Sorry it's not good news.
Yes, the colored vertical lines, this actually means that the screen is cracked internally..I know this is not something you will like to hear, because this is such a great unit, at the best there might be a loose connection, but i doubt this.
I always post a link where the use can download a updated soft copy of the manual whach can be used for future troubleshooting. Just click on the link below, where you will be directed to a page where you can download the manual.
I had the same problem. First, I changed my Memory-Stick, because after taking about 60 pictures the famous file error appeared. Secondly, if the camera shows the famous "file error" this can be resolved - at least in my case - by taking out the battery for at least 4 hours. So, if your camera is not in use, always take out the memory-stick and the battery and the problem does not appear. This helped in my case. However, this is in my opinion anything but satisfying. I had a Nikon Coolpix nd never experienced any problems like the "file error" of the sony digicams.
