One of the identical mowers has become slow but both drive belts are tight . How do you adjust the go pedal . it is foot operated. the same pedal operates forward and reverse and the speed. it has separate throttle for the engine . engine runs

The front belt should be a 954-0280A, rear 954-0370. When you go to higher gears, the front belt should be getting tighter as the vari-speed pulley is moving further back. Remove the shift plate, put the transmission in neutral. Start the engine, put speed selector in highest gear and slowly let out on the clutch. You should be able to see what the problem is. It will do everything the same as if were in gear, except move. Make sure you have the correct belts.

Might want to remove the blower housing and check for trash blocking governor mechanism.

If the spring has only become dislodged, and not broken, you just need to find out where it goes. Take a digital picture of the carburetor from the top (you may have to remove the plastic shroud). Take another from the side, and from wherever else you can get an angle. Take the camera and small mirror with you to a place that sells mowers. B&S doesn't change their engines & carbs very often. You just need to find any mower with a 4 hp B&S, or even a 4.5 to 6.5 will probably be similar enough.

These inexpensive mowers are not made for large scale mowing. They're set to run as fast as they do and have low compression (read that as low power also) to make them easy to start and operate. About the only thing you can do to make it work better is keep the air cleaner clean, use fresh gas and keep the blade sharp so it cuts the grass easier. Mowing more often also means less cuttings under the deck so it works more efficently.
