The following advice is for replacing the "Agitator Dogs" on Kenmore and Whirlpool TOP LOADER style washing machines. This simple repair can save you a fortune in repair costs as the replacement parts are very inexpensive at a cost of less than $10. The replacement kit part number is 80040. You can order on line at various appliance parts websites, or use this part number and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer.

What are "Agitator Dogs"? These are small plastic pieces (usually 4) that are located under the agitator center cap that grip the agitator and turn it during the wash cycle. They can (and do) wear out dependent upon the use of the washer. If you are in the habit of doing large load sizes frequently, or wash large items such blankets or afghans, this can wear the teeth off and reduce the life of the agitator dogs.

SYMPTOMS REQURING REPLACEMENT: The agitator fails to turn during the wash cycle, or will not turn with a heavy load. The timer will run normally through all cycles, and you will be able to hear the gearcase (transmission) engage and run. The washer will also drain normally. The only indication that something is wrong will be the agitator slipping or not turning at all. The result will be clothes that do not wash properly and will sit on the bottom of the wash tub.

To replace the Agitator Dogs, follow these steps:

1.Remove the agitator center cap by either pulling straight up or gently placing a flat blade screwdriver into a slot located in the cap.
2.If the agitator is equipped with an inner cap with a handle, remove this as well by pulling straight up.
3.Remove the center bolt of the agitator. You will have either a 7/16" hex bolt or a recessed square plastic nut. If you have the square recessed type, use a 3/8" to ½" ratchet adapter to remove.
4.Remove the agitator by grasping the bottom flange and carefully pulling straight up. Try to keep all the parts assembled while doing this, so do not pull too hard. This will make this repair much easier.
5.Place your hand over the top of the agitator and separate the upper portion of the agitator from the lower portion and turn the top half over in your hand. The agitator dog assembly will come out in your hand.
6.With the agitator dog assembly in your hand, lay the rest of the agitator aside. Pay careful attention to how the dogs are installed. Remove the worn dogs and reinstall new ones. It's that simple.
7.With all the dogs replaced and the assembly still in your hand, place the upper part of the agitator over the top of it, upside down, ensuring the inner assembly tabs align correctly.
8.Now keep your hand over the agitator top to hold all the pieces together and turn the entire assembly over (upright position).
9.Carefully align and reinsert the upper portion of the agitator to the lower portion. Again, making sure the two pieces align correctly.
10.Place the entire agitator assembly back on the gearcase shaft and reinstall center nut. NOTE: DO NOT over tighten the nut, or the agitator will not spin correctly. Just make the nut snug. Reinstall center cap and inner cap (if equipped).

These instructions should give you the basics on how to perform this repair. Since there are various agitator types in use by Whirlpool and Kenmore, assembly can vary.

Agitator broken off in top load Sears 300 washing machine..i have manual from purchase noting model 110.2234/2244. where can I get replacement part.

That isn't a complete model number. I found three models at Sears Parts Direct that started with110.2234* . Click on the Models tab at https://www.searspartsdirect.com/search?q=110.2234 . The three machines use the same parts. The parts diagram for the Kenmore 110.22342511 top load washer here: https://www.searspartsdirect.com/model/3219xhjolw-000582/kenmore-11022342511-washer-parts . The upper agitator is given a different number on the basket diagram for some of the models. However, the current replacement is part W10836692. This is back-ordered at Sears Parts Direct. It's listed as in stock at https://www.maytagreplacementparts.com/PartDetail/Upper-Agitator/W10836692/4363274 and https://www.appliancepartspros.com/whirlpool-agitator-w10836692-ap5988691.html .

Kenmore manuals almost never list the full model number. They make one for several models in a line or multiple lines. In this case, the manual covers two series: 110.2234xxxx and 110.2244xxxx washers. 110 means that the machines were made by Whirlpool with the Kenmore nameplate. Manuals Lib has a copy of this manual here: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1327493/Kenmore-110-2234-Series.html . In the future, you can usually find the model number in one of several places on the washer. Check for the label on the back of the control panel, on the back in the upper left corner. or inside the washer on the frame under the lid for a top-load machine. There are a few other spots where the label could be but those are the most common. I hope this helps.

Owners manual for sears kenmore washing machine type 588-08 model number 110-21102011

Many Kenmore appliance manuals are available from the Sears Parts Direct site: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/ . The manual page for the 110.21102011 washer is http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals/11021102011-Kenmore-Parts-Washer-Parts-manual?searchTerm= if you want to read it in your browser. (A PDF plugin is needed.) The direct link to the manual is http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/pd_download/lis_pdf/OWNM/1009787L.pdf if you want to read the document in your PDF reader software.

The parts diagrams may be more useful for how to remove the agitator. Those are available here: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/kenmore-parts-washer-parts/model-11021102011/0582/0153200.html?searchType=modelSearch&prst=&q=11021102011&searchTerm=11021102011&shdPart= . The agitator is shown in the Basket and Tub Parts diagram: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/kenmore-washer-parts/model-11021102011/0582/0153200/K1103004/00003.html .

I hope this helps.

I have a Kenmore 110. (full number is 110-82984810) It has a "ratchet/screw" type agitator. The big fins on the bottom part agitate back and forth, but the center piece no longer moves in a...

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Kenmore-Parts/Washer-Parts/Model-11082984810/0582/0153200?pathTaken=

and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

If the bottom agitates and not the top, the problem is likely the 4 "agitator dogs" designed to allow the top agitator to turn only one way.

Look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.

See the part "Dog, agitator "

Remove the fabric softener unit, lift the top agitator cap (use a screwdriver) and you should see a plastic part in the center of the top agitator with a 1/2" square drive.

Remove the drive and lift off the top agitator. Turning it over you should see the 4 "dogs", replace these and the top agitator should turn in one direction only.

Replace the 1/2" drive, the cap and fabric softener unit and the top agitator should work.

Also see the following illustrated description of the above.

Agitator catches sporadically. Sounds like

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.#######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Next, see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service manual for top load, direct drive washers.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

This points to one of two areas.
The first is the splines in the agitators worn or damaged:

See the following for how to remove the agitators and check the splines.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

You don't have to remove the cabinet, motor, transmission tub etc.

If the splines on the agitators are OK, the problem could be a slipping clutch.

Remove the cabinet, pump, motor and transmission (you already have the agitators out) and check the clutch springs and bands.

If they are worn/damaged Sears has a replacement band kit for a lot less than a complete clutch.

Washer won't agitate

First, see the Sears parts site for washer model # 110.22952100 which I believe is your model.

Look at the section containing the agitator and you should see how the parts fit.

Also see the following for an illustrated description of replacing the "dogs"

Agitator spins in one direction

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

If you have a two piece agitator, the top section is only supposed to move one way.

See the section in the Sears site for the agitator dogs.

If the lower section only turns in one direction, the problem is likely in the transmission.

See the following Whirlpool Service Manual for top load direct drive washers.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

Kenmore washing machine Model 110.4767292, squeaky agitator

I can't seem to get the Sears Parts site for your washer model number.

Can you verify that it's correct?

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

In the interim, here is the Whirlpool Service manual for top load, direct drive washers.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

Following is a procedure for removing the agitator(s) on top load washers.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=136

If you take the agitators out, I'd make sure that any "gunk" is cleaned off and check the splines inside the agitator and on the transmission agitator shaft.

It's probably not a serious problem.

Agitator does not turn ..... you can hold on to & it doesn't turn in wash cycle

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (110.#######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

If you move the timer to the spin cycle and the washer drains and spins, the motor coupler (A common replacement part) is OK.

This points to one of two possible solutions.

First, I'd remove the agitator(s) and look inside at the splines inside the agitators and at the splines on the main agitator shaft.

Here is a description of how to remove the agitators. Your washer may be a bit different but the Sears site should help to determine how to do it.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=136&osCsid=7a980a8b05b84ff3b7ee1c8ba46e2ae8

If yoy have a two piece agitator and only the top section doesn't agitate, the problem is likely the agitator "dogs" as described in the illustrations.

If the Agitator splines are worn or damaged, You'll have to replace the agitator.

If the splines on the transmission agitator shaft are worn, you'll probably need a new or rebuilt transmission.

In addition, see the following Whirlpool / Kenmore service manual and parts list for their commercial washers (consumer models are basically the same).

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf
