Question about Planar XP17W (White) Monitor

2 Answers

Monitor will not stay on.

I plug in the monitor and it will not stay on. I can not get the black back cover off very easily either. I have done things like this before so i am willing to do work on it myself. Thank you. I think it is the voltage controller for the cold cathodes.

I'd start with taking off the 4 screws and then you have to unclip the cover from the rear. Remove the metal shield to expose the boards. The most common problem is the 5 1000uf, 16v, capacitors. Replacing these(often they are leaking or bulging), should bring back your backlight.

It could likely be the flyback transformer, usually found in the right or left rear corner of the monitor. Be careful though, it packs enough stored power to kill ya. ZT3000 "Beta tester of "0"s and "1's"

    I must apologize!!

I should have looked at the model # prior to giving my advice. This is not a CRT as I had assumed from your post.

On this LCD (or any LCD for that matter), there is NO flyback transformer.

I'm familiar with your problem, though and it could be a backlight failure, or an inverter circuit related failure.

Your safest bet is to contact the folks at www.lcdrepar.net. I would go to their website, you will see they do serious LCD repair and diagnosis.

If you want to email them, try their web based email page athttp://laptops.home.att.net/tuwytao.htm

Were does the little black hose go by the filter

The black hose is a drain. It drains the water out of the filter housing prior cleaning the filter. It has a plug in the end. Take out the plug and drain the water into a shallow pan. When done, the plugged hose just stays behind the cover.

How do you connect 200897 battery, it is no longer working

I just bought a battery (readily available) for $16 and here is how I replaced it, but first, make sure UPS is disconnected from 120 Volt service. (Old battery number SW1233 with F connectors.)

Turn the UPS over and look for 1 tiny screw (even with the "in" telephone wire socket). Remove the screw (turn CCW). Push the button marked push, then slip a steak knife or sharp putty knife into the joint in front of the screw hole. Twist the tool enough to start the battery cover moving backward (to your left).

The battery is upside down. Lift it high enough to grab wires and pull them off the postst.

Verify battery you bought fits the housing. With UPS upside down, place battery on right side with lugs toward the power cable. Push red wire onto red post. Hold the battery upside over UPS. Push black wire onto black post.

Visually ensure the wires both run in their channels (otherwise the battery will not seat and the cover won't slide on.) Push battery into slot until it bottoms.

When the battery is bottomed properly, hold the cover about 2/3's over the battery housing, push it down, then push it toward the screw hole (to your right). If this operation, or the cover jams near the screw hole, check the battery. It must be absolutely bottomed in the slot. The cover won't go on easily even when everything is perfectly aligned.

After the cover is closed and the screw replaced, plug the UPS into a wall socket. The on/off button has a mind of its own, so ignore it. The green light may light and there is one beep. The backup yellow light may blink. The green light may stay solidly on. Pull the cord plug out of the wall. Now the UPS green light may go out and you will hear a ratcheting sound (the UPS is making AC from the 12 Volt battery current). Because you have no device plugged into a "battery-backup" plug, the UPS will shut off automatically in a few minutes.

The last test is to reconnect the plug to the wall service, then plug a monitor, a music system, or something similar into a Battery B/U connector. The green light should light. When the UPS is again unplugged, the yellow light (Backup) flashes and there is a repeating beep. Plug UPS back in. Only the green light will be on. That's it, all done.

I use Newpoint UPS to back up my telephone/modem. During a brownout, SPS powers those units almost 2 hours.

Note: This UPS is not suitable for powering or charging Laptops because the power output is too dirty.

After the computer boots up try connecting a monitor to your VGA port and see if the picture is shown on this monitor. if you see the picture it means that your laptop's display is damaged somehow. if there is no picture on the monitor it means there is a problem with your graphic card.
Tip: after plugging in the monitor press Fn + monitor key to switch the image onto this monitor

It switches on for just a second and then the screen stays blank

yetimonsta, Are you sure that the monitor is BLANK?? Or is it just BLACK? Or is it both BLANK and BLACK? Connect a known good monitor to your pc to prove that your pc is working correctly. What does your L90D+ do when connected to good pc. Have you done the flashlight test to evaluate the state of the "switch-mode-power-supply" when lcd panel goes black /blank?? Monitor black screen

Your first step in troubleshooting this problem is to plug in another monitor to your computer. If you are having the same problem it is related to your computer. If the second monitor works fine then your original monitor is shot.

Wide vertical black and white bands

Hi, You may want to try and unplugging the power and video connectors of the Dell monitor. Check for anything out of the ordinary with the AC plug and the video connector. If none, plug them back in making sure that they are snug and fitted properly. If problem persist, see if it is possible to rotate the way the AC plug is connected to the mains (sometimes this works and can be done if you are not using 3-prong or the uneven 2-prong AC plug. Sometimes, this can also be done on the other end of the AC plug). Check your docking station (though unlikely but possibly). If still a no go and your laptop works ok, then your external monitor needs some looking at. This would involve circuit analysis and component level repair. Perhaps your best bet is to have a qualified professional take a look at it. Good luck and pls post back how things turn up or if you need further information. Kind regards.

How to remove the base from the monitor

For monitor or TV bases that have four clips, I found if two people each take two opposite clips, and use thumbs to push in the clips, we can pop the base off fairly easily. It is impossible with one person, since thumb and forefinger can't exert sufficient pressure on the clips.
