Hi Kenneth:
There's a good chance that one of the pulleys has a problem.
With the engine OFF, lie so that you can see the belt and pulleys. 1) Try to move the cutter pulleys while holding the blade. Any movement will indicate a stripped or loose connection.
2) Have a helper move the engage lever back and forth so that the belt pulls against the pulleys. Look for any unwanted movement like wobble in the pulleys.
3) Check the idler pulleys to make sure the bearings are OK.
you have a sticking float in the carburater you will have to get a carb kit for some carb cleaner any local auto store take off cleanit then let it soak in the cleaner 3 hrs hers the big you need a air compresser to blow air threw the carb little holes and big holes put it back to gather throw out gas install new gas and sea foam injecter cleaner 2 capsfull in the full tank you should be ready togo and have more power to
yes there is a pulley under the tin cover by the forward rev shift control in the center that pulley changes dia when changing speeds they get stuck and don't change position
You have a dirty carb, start off by cleaning and draining your carb and your fuel tank, remove the fuel bowl on your carb and use a spray can of carb cleaner to clean the tank and carb bowl. be careful not to ruin or loose the orings that seal the carb bowl,,put it back together with fresh gas and you should be ready to go for the summer. always be sure to add fuel stabilizer to you fuel to keep your gas from going bad and gumming up your carb,.. You can get the stabilzer at any parts store even wal mart has it it the automotive section of the store..
If its the 4hp classic type Briggs engine with the red primer bulb on the side of the carb then it needs a new diaphragm. Very cheap and simple repair.

Most common problem is the deck bearings being bad for one of the blades. The next thing to look at is the mounting arms, hsake the deck back and forth if it wiggles side to side it will need reparirs. Also check that yo have not bent any pullys and that they are all running straight.
same problem. Any solution?
