Camera was purchased over a year ago from a pawn shop (out of state). No CD software or instruction booklet. I can take pictures, review pictures, but can't download the photos on the computer. When the USB cord is connected, the view screen goes blank and the letters USB appear (next to a small icon that looks like a trident). I was told to install a program calles Picasa (version 3). That doesn't help either. I have other digital camera and haven't run into this problem before. Any suggestions?

Sometimes the best solution is also the easiest. Purchased a card reader and it now works like a charm. This is a great site. Didn't except an answer the same day I posted a question. Have a great weekend.
It's very hard to troubleshoot software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. But why put up with the headaches of bad software in the first place? In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue. Note that you'll want to make sure of getting a card reader that is stated capable of reading XD cards:
