2003 cartier 4.6L 120K miles. Rough idle, at idle only.
2003 cartier 4.6L 120K miles. At idle, and idle only, the engine will run a little "rough". When I accelerate, no problems at all. Any ideas? --- Answer: Try this. Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake. This has NOT worked. The car has been driven about 400 miles in the past 7 days. One mechanic swears there is no compression in cylinder 8 and wants to sell me an engine. Two others assure me there is no such problem, but they cannot find a solution either.
Re: 2003 cartier 4.6L 120K miles. Rough idle, at idle...
Had a 2003 no codes. Idled rough. Replaced plugs, coils, fuel filter, checked convertor(ok), cleaned throttle body and cleaned MAF. Noticed it seemed to do better at times then reverted back. Was worse with AC on. We adjusted idle up a little to help off set it till some other clues were evident. Finally got a code after 3 months. P0507 - replaced the idle air controller valve with a motorcraft part and now it manages the adjustments based on load and no longer rough. A mystery solved.

There could be many issues. These codes read your engine is running too lean. Check : all your vacuum hoses for leaks, PCV valve and hose, MAF sensor. This may require an experienced technician to figure this out. Hopefully I help'd!!
This code is most likely not related to the problem, it sounds like you may have picked up some contaminated gasoline, maybe has water in it or other like dirt.
First though, disconnect battery for 1/2 hour. Restart engine and drive for 15 miles while computer relearns changes you made. Will run rough for this period.
More maintenance history needed. Oil changed regularly, timing belt replaced at 60 K miles, Engine air filter & intake air hose inspection?
Causes of the problem you describe are many. Recommend you have a technician check your throttle position sensor for any bad spots in the potentiometer... most likely cause when there is NO Check Engine light.
