I filed a complaint with the California Attorney general. I suggest everyone do something similar. I also suggest, we all get together and form a class and filed a class action. I have an attorney that will take the case if we have a sufficient class (i.e. over 10). Here is a summary of my complaint (you are free to cut and paste):

    Company Name: Protron SpectronIQ
Company Address Line: 921 south azusa ave
    Company Address Line 2:
    Company City: City of Industry
    Company State: CA
    Company Zip: 91748
    Company Zip4:
    Company Area Code: 888
    Company Phone Number: 2578899

Comment Or Question Message: Product: Spectroniq PLTV-32 32" LCD TV

    Cost: $1399 plus shipping

    Date of Transaction: 10/5/05

Product was Advertised on Shop NBC

    Bill of sale (contract) executed.

The A/C adaptor is faulty. This is a pervasive problem with the TV. There are literally hundreds of complaints on the internet. Most deal with a faulty A/C adaptor and the inability of the company to provide a replacement part. I have contacted the company over 15 times since May 2007. Each time the response is "the part is Back Ordered and will be here in 2 weeks". The company uses stall tactics to placate angry customers. The company is a tawainese company that has it's offices in California...I am in Virginia. I am writing you due to the jursidication of the headquarters and the fact it was advertised on ShopNBC. I am merely seeking a replacement a/c adaptor (also called a power supply) to get the TV working. I have not filed any lawsuits nor spoken with an attorney. Please read this site for a sample of complaints:http://www.fixya.com/support/p17605-prot...

I have had my protron pltv26 for 15 months when it froze up, then would not come back on after shutting it off .I called protron and they couldnt tell me anything but to take it to a tv repair guy. I called several and only 1 could tell me anything,it will cost you more to fix it than its worth and good luck on finding parts or literature on it.All protron could do is put me on hold and never pick the phone back up.These waves of products that are un-servicable are only the start of a war on America consumers and know buddy does anything about it because most of the people that can help are getting there pockets lined by the Corp-Rat burden.

I purchased a Protron32" LCD/TV in summer of 2005 for $1300K from ShopNBC. This piece of electronic is the biggest piece of garbage ever to hit the market. We had image problems from the 3rd month of ownership, the remote we gave up on shortly thereafter and the power adapter burned out almost 2 yrs after we bought it. We've been unsuccessful in our attempts to try to resolve these issues, so we gave up! The TV now sits in one of our guest bedrooms (the one we don't use) where we'll be sure not to run into it. What makes these situations really, really bad is that, like every other complaint of which I'm just now finding out, the consumer is left out hanging - customer service -well, THERE IS NONE! No one has the right answer nor can they even point you in the right direction. Not at ShopNBC nor at Protron. Their tactic is to delay, delay, delay until the consumer finally just gives up. I agree that a class action suit is definately the answer.

I have called protron numerous times as well. I even sen tthem a check for a new adapter, after getting the same run around about adapter not being in stock for months. Check was never cashed or adapter was never sent. TV has not worked for about 5 months or longer.

  • grich Dec 05, 2007

My Protron 32" pltv ......burned out a/c adapter .

Protron customer service told me back on 9/12/07 they had the part in stock .....and I should send them $79.99 and they would send it right out to me. I never received it.

I have contacted Protron customer service every week since then.....only to be told that the part is on back order and it would be in in a week. As of today we have nothing.Protron customer service is a joke and has B.S.'d me long enough.

If anyone wishes to start a Class Action against Protron Corp. they can count me in.

    Anxiously await your reply.

  • 123isabell Dec 09, 2007

ONCE WE TURN THE TV ON THEN THE VOLUME GOES ALL THE WAY TO OFF. THEN YOU CAN NOT TURN OFF THE T.V. YOU HAVE TO UN PLUG IT. IT'S REALLY A PEICE OF CRAP. IT'S LESS THAN TWO YEARS OLD. HAVE NOT TAKEN ANY STEPS TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM YET. SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL NOT GET ME ANY WHERE. SHOP NBC SHOULD BE ACCOUNTABLE AS WELL.

  • Anonymous Dec 16, 2007

I have a Protron 32" LCD tv purchased in May 2005 from ShopNBC.  AC adapter/power supply broke 2 nites ago.  I have been on the phone with ShopNBC essentially providing no assistance.  Just got off of the ph with Spectron (formally Protron) with the same crap story that everyone else is getting wrt the power adaptor.....call back on Jan 15 to place an order as they are backordered....today is Dec 15....and oh..by the way, we do  not take credit cards so you must send a check or money order......this is concerning as it is completely atypical from a business standpoint and is likely to be a ploy to get cash with out sending product that is ordered.....I will be filing with the Attorney General of Californian

  • Marty819 Jan 01, 2008

I thought I was the only one experiencing this problem. My situation is exactly what has been described here. In addition to contacting Protron and getting the runaround I also contacted ShopNBC on several occasions. I was promised a response but have never received one.

It appears all the TV's were manufactured in 2005 and this is a common issue with them all. These TV's should be recalled. Since I don't think that is going to happen I am interested in a class action lawsuit and any other measures we can take against ShopNBC AND Protron.

I will periodically check this website for any updates on a potential class action suit and will post an update if I have any resolution to my issue.

  • nancylee Jan 20, 2008

I have the same problem. I have actually tried contacting Protron since May 2007. I actually scheduled a reminder on my computer to make sure I called them every 2 weeks. Each time I got the same response that it was out of stock and I had to call back. I have never been so frustrated. If you have any solutions or would like to file a suit, please count me in.

  • jim allegretto Jan 28, 2008

I started this string with a complaint to the California Attorney General. I would like to hire a lawyer that would take this case on a contingent fee basis. I need all parties affected by this defective adaptor to email me at jimaleg@aol.com so I can accumulate a plaintiff list. Furthermore, I strongly suggest each of you follow my lead by filing a complaint with the California Attorney General naming both Protron and ShopNBC. I gave you the complaint form and email address and you can cut and paste my complaint above.

As an update I received the adaptor after sending a check in over 4 months ago. It worked for a total of 4 tries before going dead. They cashed my check. We all need to work as a group. If anyone else wants to take the lead or has a preferred attorney in California that handles warranty/defective product issues. Please let me know that also!

  • Keani Jan 28, 2008

I have the same problem with my Protron TV, failing to work. Purchased in 1995 from NBC Network.  Please contact me at cheraloha2008@gmail.com. Have no assistance for you.  No response from Protron Spectron.

  • Anonymous Jan 30, 2008

I ALSO FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE NYS ATTORNEY GENERAL AND REPORTED THE PRODUCT TO THE CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION. MY TV STARTED TO BURN WHEN MY SON TURNED IT ON. THE ADAPTERS ARE IN BUT, THEY ARE NOW $138.00

  • jim allegretto Feb 01, 2008

Let's not use this forum to vent, RATHER let's use it to rally together as a group and force SpectronsIQ/ShopNBC to recall or provide some form of compensation for marketing a product with a major defect. So far I have heard from about 5 of you...That's not enough for a class action. I need more respondants, dates of purchase, invoice numbers; if purchased on ShopNBC. It would be ideal if you filed a complaint with ShopNBC (assuming that's where you purchased it...you'll need your invoice number) and/or California or NY state attorney general. I also need someone in California to find me a product liability attorney that would take this case on a contingent fee basis. If we get an attorney they may settle based on the nuisance factor! We just need to get going!

IT HAS BEEN OVER ONE YEAR OF CONSTANTLY CALLING CUSTOMER SERVICE AND I HAVE NOT RECEIVED A REPLACMENT TELEVISION CLEARLY THIS IS A CROOKED COMPANY. SHOP NBC IS JUST AS GUILTY AS PROTRON . SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE BUT WHAT? I AM WILLING TO BE INVOLVED IN A LAWSUIT

  • gkeys Feb 26, 2008

I have the same problem. I purchased a second party power supply from an ebay store and it quit working after a month. They sent another and it also died. I think there might be a problem with excessive heat in the pwr supply. I'm no electronics expert, but this seems like a problem with the TV and not the power supply. Anyone have a success story?

Shop NBC said they will no longer carry this item because of the repair problems. A tech guy from there said he used to be a TV repairman and that I needed a power supply. Two tv repair places even refused to take the tv; said to throw it away. The third took it, but called back after a month of waiting and said they could not get any response from Protron parts. After spending more than $1000 and less than 2 years of service, I'm REALLY ticked!

I could not believe the pages and pages of people who have spent thousands of dollars for a piece of junk!

I'll be glad to join a class action suit, or to do whatever I need to do to get this company out of business! My e-mail is dlb@cfl.rr.com. I agree that shopnbc has a responsibility, also.

  • Anonymous Apr 29, 2008

Same exact problem. Difficult to even talk about this, since we have had no TV for almost 2.5 years. Purchased June 2005, adaptor went out 11month into the warranty - BS until today 04/29/08 were we received 3 adaptor packs so far, 1 replacement from ShopNBC, then they just referred us to Protron directly. We ordered and they send us an adaptor after about another 13 months - which does not work. We are soooo fed up with ShopNBC, their unprofessional attitude is horrid from such a large corporation. Everytime we contact them, they give us their 1st name and company ID and you can never get the same person. They finally called today and said that it's over and they will not do anything else for us. We offered to either have a credit with them in the amount we have paid and they cashed almost 3 years ago, or have a list of TV we can select from...Yeah right. Wishful thinking. We are ready to file a lawsuit asap. We got a lemon. We were informed by LCD TV-salesman that LCD TVs are not suppose to have adaptor packs..that is a sign of a faulty product...

  • Anonymous May 29, 2008

I have had the exact same problems with the Protron PLTV-32 as described by the previous emails. I too purchased it through Shopnbc in June 2005. My adaptor failed in Sept. 2007, had to wait 4 months and after multiple calls, finally got it in Dec. 2007, and then the TV failed. Took it to a local authorized repair shop, who told me it needed a new motherboard. Shopnbc refused to take any responsibility. Protron insisted on a $250 check to cover the cost of the board. This was Jan 2008. To date, May 2008, after weekly calls, speaking to numerous reps. and sending a registered letter to corporate headquarters, I have still not received the board, but they did cash the check. Each time it is a different excuse. On the last call several days ago, I blew a fuse and accused them of lying and committing fraud. I looked up the better business bureau and found they have multiple complaints against them. They are now also operating under the name Spectroniq. It seems they feel they can get away with selling defective sets, and not backing up their products with parts or refunds of monies paid. This is because no one has litigated against them.

I'm a not a lawyer, but I know a class action suit requires at least 3 plaintiffs, and by the looks of the amount of people involved, it appears at least a dozen people have been defrauded. If an attorney would get involved, probably in Cal., as that is their location, it might be lucrative enough for one to take on the case and sue both Protron and Shopnbc for deceptive sales and advertising and fraud, as well as theft, for taking money and not returning it. I would definitely be interested in participating. Please lets communicate and brainstorm to deal with this situation. I am so angry I could scream. It has already cost me nearly total $1800. They may well respond if they are sued, as it appears they have not been to date.

Looking forward to hear from you.

    Thanks, Josh

  • jim allegretto May 29, 2008

That's for you input Josh but if you think you're ready to get a lawyer in california...I have about 10 emails of disgrunted buyers...I also suggest you post an email to get ahold of you...right now you're listed as a "guest"!!!! I notice that this string is more a bunch of complaining rather than legal action...which will get shop NBC and Protron moving...so if anyway can help with a lawyer in Cali that will take this case speak up or don't waste your and our time!

  • Donna Ree May 31, 2008

I believe I have posted the same problem, but don't know if I'm posting in the correct place or contacting the right person. I am getting notices that FixYa has my e-mail. I also contacted the local (Orlando Sentinel) complaint person, but received no response from him. Tell me what to do, and I'll do it. I'm on a fixed income, and this tv was a HUGE investment for us.

Sears also should be listed as being at fault. I bought my Protron TV from Sears less than 1.5 years ago and it is dead. The TV repair shop said it would cost $568.77 to repair based on getting the part, and there's no telling whether the repair will last.

Sorry to be so late in this but bought my set in 2005 and just failed for the second time. First was thew remote, fixed this with a new $50 remote I had to reprogram. Second time, failure to the TV external power supply. Called Proton and Shop NBC they both have nothing to say but go to another TV repair shop. After the first few times Proton seems ot have my name now, so ever time I call which has been about 10 times, they just hang up or never re-answer the phone if you are transferred. I just get no reposne. After reading all the problems, Count me in on any law-suite. Shop NBC will never get any more of my business nor will off brands. Where is Jim Peterson now with his droning of how wonderful this unit is. He, Shop-NBC, and Protron should all be included in the suite for representing a fraud on the Consumer.

  • shopnbcsucks Jun 10, 2008

I too have the same problem with the power adapter having died a few weeks back. The TV was used maybe 25 times only, since I have multiple wall-mounted TVs and this one is the smallest and thus relegated to the garage. It was purchased in 2005 from shopNBC and we even purchased an extended warranty, which, of course, expired earlier this year :-) Anyway, I wanted to solicit inputs from as many folks as possible on whether on whether LCDPayless's replacement adapter works fine. Otherwise, I would hate to throw $125 on a TV that should perhaps be just discarded. Really disappointed in ShopNBC that they would have collaborated with what appears to be a company run by crooks. Their websites seem to no longer work either.

We bought the same TV in 2005 from ShopNBC, and we just lost the sound two days ago. I've been looking on the net to find some consumer support, and I've found none. But instead, I found your forum!

I will contact ShopNBC and file a complaint.

Please add me to your list for a class action suit.

    Thank you,

I'm not sure if we have the exact problem as most of you but here are our specifics: We purchased a Protron model PLTV 3250 LCD TV on 03/01/07 from SEARS in LAS VEGAS,NV. After 5 months of fairly good performance the picture went black but the sound continued to work. I don't remember it having an adapter but I haven't seen it in so long it may have had one. Since we were 1 month past the date when we could have returned it to SEARS we followed the warranty instructions, called 1-888-257-8899 to obtain an authorization #, packed it in it's original packing & shipped it off to the PROTRON WARRANTY DEPT./ P.O. BOX 9148/ ONTARIO,CA 91762-9998. We shipped it FEDEX so we could track it. We were in the process of moving to TX at the same time but were able to give them new address ,phone etc.We were initially told repair would take 6 to 8 weeks. When we hadn't heard from them by late Sept. we called & were told it would be "a few more weeks. We are waiting on a part." We have called them on appx the 20th of every month since with variations on the same theme in 12/07 we were promised a refurbished TV if parts weren't here by early Jan.08. In Feb.someone who said he was the"manager" stated he would call me in March08 to work out a solution if parts don't come in. I threatened legal action etc if something wasn't done. We are still getting the same answers & no one seems to remember any of their promises.I personally think there is only one person who answers the phone & he just makes up new names. The voice is the same each time. I got really sick in March & am just now really getting back on my feet so I haven't filed a small claims court law suit. I would be happy to join any class action suit you are working on. I am disabled & on Medicare so this purchase was a huge layout of cash for me. It was my 1st new TV since 1998. Just let me know what I need to do to help. I will send my complaint to the CA ATTY GEN & throw in NV & TX too! Also the BBB & SEARS. I have all my original documentation & shipping info. NANCY S

The AC Adotor for the Protron LCD is bad

  • steveluannj Jul 17, 2008

I don't have the same problem, but I have a problem with Protron. We bought a TV from Sears in Jan 07 - it was defective, so we sent it to Protron and got a replacement back in 3 months. But the replacement was defective, so we got the RMA number and sent it back in Nov 07. We still have not received a replacement and everytime I call they say wait 2 weeks! I sent a certified letter to Leo Chen, who is listed as the agent for service of process on the California Secretary of State's website. The letter was returned to me. I am thinking about filing a claim in small claims court, but if there's anything else I can do, let me know, please. LuAnn steveluannj@gmail.com

Just to let everyone know. I have compiled a list of people that purchased from Protron that have a legitimate product liability claim. I am unable to do much with this list but if anyone can find an attorney that will work on a contingent fee basis in California where the company is located, I will forward the list on to you. Other than that, I'm not sure what else I can do.

My Protron 32" LCD just failed yesterday, 9/24/08. I purchased it from ShopNBC 3 1/2 years ago. The problem is the Power Supply/Adapter. I have been reading all of the other people with the same problem who have not been able to obtain a replacement part. I guess I'm lucky that I got three years out of it.......

My mother purchased one of these Protron set on Shop/NBC and has had an issue of dead cells appearing on the screen. The problem has worsened and is about 12 inches long. This company has not been cooperative in a solution to solve this issue. It looks like she is out the 1700 she paid for a defective product.

On 12/30/2006, I purchased two Protron LCD TV's item # V37810 from ShopNBC for $1749.93 plus $99.99 shipping. One was a 42" and the other a 20". I owned the TV's for about three months before putting them in service due to a remodel going on at home. The 42 went out (could not turn on or off) within the first month of use and the 20" within the first 6 months. I called ShopNBC and they would not do anything about it whatsoever. Needless to say, I am VERY upset and want my money back like everyone else. PLEASE HELP!.

My Protron PLTV-3250 is about 3 years old. It just stopped working yesterday 3/27/2009. I am pretty sure it is the power supply. I would like to fix it, but after doing some research on the internet, I found the same problem from a lot of people and am not too optomistic I will get a chance to fix this. It looks like the company is busted, and not even worth my while to attempt to go any further. I will hang on to the TV, and hope someone will have a chance to fight this.

  • Anonymous Apr 03, 2009

We purchased our Protron 32 from shop NBC as well. The fan power adapter stopped working properly almost immediately. Sometimes it would turn on sometimes not. The sound would com on but no picture. We called Protron immediately and were told that is was because of how we set the settings. We were told we would have to reset the factory settings. We did this but it did not solve the problem. Each time we called we were told the same thing after being on hold forever and they would not do anything. In anger finally called again and were told we were out of the warranty period and would have to pay $80 plus shipping for a new adaptor but they were back ordered and we would have to call back. After 4 calls and being told back ordered we gave up.

I too have a piece of gatbage TV from Protron. I also bought it from SHOP NBC. I had to buy them in a pair. ( I guess that they KNEW that they had junk and they had to sell quick !!!)
The 1st 6 months, the 1st one broke and they did send me a new one. (the tv switched modes by itself !) Now 2 1/2 years later the 2nd TV BLEW !!!! Now I am out a TV...I called SHOP NBC and needless to say they took all blame off themselves and told me the warranty was expired. I asked the representative if HE thought a TV should only last 2 1/2 years !? He said NOTHING !!! If there is a lawsuit filed i would like to be a part of it . Michele

I had a power supply for my Protron 32 inch TV that was not working. I bought the one on ebay and it stopped working after only three weeks. Ultimately I found a guy who could fix my original power supply for a reasonable price. It's been working for a year now with no problems. I wish I would have tried him first!!!! If anyone is interested his email is dave@thola.com.

I have had the exact same problems with the Protron PLTV-32 as described by the previous emails. I too purchased it through ShopNBC in June 2005. My adaptor failed in Sept. 2007, had to wait 4 months and after multiple and weekly calls, finally got it in Dec.2007. Then the TV failed. Took it to a local authorized repair shop, and was told it needed a new motherboard. ShopNBC refused to take responsibility. Protron insisted on a $250 check to cover the cost of the board. This is early Jan. 2008.To date, end of May 2008, after weekly calls, speaking to numerous reps, and sending a registered letter to corporate haedquarters w/o response, I have still not received the board, but they certainly cashed the check. Each time it is a different excuse, supplier, warehouse problem etc. On the last call several days ago, I blew a fuse and accused them of lying and committing fraud. I looked up the better business bureau in Cal. and found they have multiple complaints against them. They now operate under the name Spectroniq. It seems they feel they can get away with knowingly selling defective sets, and not backing up their products with parts or refunds of monies paid. This is because no one has litigated against them and they feel people will just swallow the loss.
I'm not a lawyer, but I do know a class action suit needs at least 3 plaintiffs, and by the looks of the amount of people, at least 20 have been similarly defrauded. If an attorney would get involved, probably in Cal., as that is their location, it might be lucrative enough to take on the case and sue both Protron and ShopNBC for deceptive sales, advertising and fraud, as well as theft, for taking money not returning it. I would definitely be interested in participating. I just found this website and hope to communicate and brainstorm to deal with this situation. I am so angry I could scream. We are all being screwed in so many ways today, we cannot let this go. It has already cost me nearly $1800. They may well respond if they are sued, as it appears they have not been to date. Remember, even the big corps., like General Motors, big tobacco, and Microsoft, really didn't want the bad publicity and realized it would have been better to settle.
Looking forward to hearing from you all.
Thanks, Josh

I also purchased an LCD Payless replacement adaptor set and it died after a month. They sent a new set and it also died. Obviously a problem with the TV and not the power supply. Seems like such a waste but I guess it's time to recycle.

LCDPAYLESS is the way to go. I got them bid down to $105 plus shipping and the unit came in the mail in less than a week. It is made up of two power suplies, one is 12 volt and the other is 5 volt which are the correct rated voltages and amperage for the set. It not only works but solves the picture distortion problem when using full screen. The symptom of incorrrect voltage is that most people and things looked "fat" or "stretched out" on the sides (approx 1/4 of the picture area on each side of the picture). This must have been a sign that the original power supply was bad (incorrect or weak voltage rating) right from the very begining. The IC chips in the power supply units might have been of source material with poor tolerance to save money and slapped together quick to mass market to ShopNBC, then the problems got passed on to us the consumers. I noticed that ShopNBC does not carry this brand anymore, looks like they are trying to distance themselves. Where is Jim Peterson saying the sets would "last 25 years". I hate it that ShopNBC drones on and on with sales pitches with such fantastic claims. Class action might be the way to go. Protron might have known about the incorrect weak voltage problem but rushed it to market anyway. They may have put a quick one over on ShopNBC with the promo sets, need to look into this.

Have you thought about taking the problem to the news media? I know when I lived in SoCA I think it was called " 7 ON YOUR SIDE" It was there to help the consumer. Great results, however, I no longer live in CA so they wouldn't be interested in hearing from me. So come on CA this could help all of us.

I had the same problem with the Protron 32" LCD TV. After getting the run around by the Home office I decided to bite the bullet & do it on my own. I found a replacement adapter at LCDPAYLESS.COM . Place the order and had everything within a week. Now that I have a working adapter, I'm waiting for that piece of crap TV to go up in smoke. I'll never do business with Protron, SpectronIQ, or Shop NBC again.

I also purchased the Protron from ShopNBC in April 2005, and the power adapter failed in Jan. 2007. Same story, repeated calls and two week promises. However, I got a local number for the company, I live in So. Orange County, Ca., and finally talked to the warehouse. It took another three months with weekly calls, but I got 2 new adapters!!!!
Guess what....TV stopped working...repairman said to recycle it.
So I have 2 adapters and nothing to adapt!

Juliet I am in the same boat as you. At least they didn't cash the check. I guess they got tired of my voice about not having the adapter so they decided to take out money just to shut us up.
What can we do? I will be willing to participate fully

I to have had the problem getting a new d/c adapter since March 2007. They say the same things over and over again. Call back in two weeks on back order the warehouse said it will be in 2 weeks. The last time in September they said to send a check for $79.99, which I did but they haven't cashed the check. I'm wondering is they're any brand a/c adapter that we can use in it's place?

I read on another website that Protron will never provide replacement parts for the remote or AC adaptor. I have had my 32" LCD for just over two years and today it decided to die. Up until today, it has been a great TV, but I won't buy a "no name" tv again.

Ac adaptor on my 32 Protron inch LCD TV no longer work

What is the current output of the adaptor? If it is AC and you use only the 12v to 3v it is ok. But if the current output of the adaptor is DC and you use both 24v to 6v and 12v to 3v there is some danger if use the new one. Remember that DC current have polarity.

AC ADAPTOR 090-02180-I3

Here's the only place I know that sells them:
http://stores.ebay.com/LCDPAYLESS_LCD-monitor-Power-Supply_W0QQcolZ2QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZ2195941QQftidZ2QQtZkm

It seem to be the #1 common problem with the Protron TV.
It maybe cheaper to find someone to fix the power supply, but if you get it from LCDPAYLESS, make sure it has some type of warranty on it. I hate to see anyone pay $130 and it only last a couple of months.

Girociclo I'll pay to have my ac adaptor fixed!!!!!1

Protron said that I would have a new adapter(090-02180-13) in 2 weeks. My tv was under warranty but if it wouldn't have been they said you could order an adapter for $79.00. My adapter is over heating and I have placed a small fan blowing into it and so far it has kept it cool and the tv has not shut off automatically as of yet.
