How do you replace the driver's side door handle on a 1991 vw?

It needs to be recoded it has lost its memory

Remove the inner door panel and make sure the actuator rod for the exterior handle is still engaged. If it is then the handle itself needs to be replaced.

Most likely the "paddle" that attaches to the lock cylinder is broken

There is only one screw holding the door handle in, the screw is right on the inside of the door. Its right above where the door attaches to the door.

I might have the solution for your problem. I paid $1,700 to learn it.

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls.

If this happen to others check with VW to is if there is a recall on it. You can also check on the Web to see if there is a recall on it. If there is VW will fix it free.

place the key in the door depending on the model. driver side door. Turn it to lock for a few minutes, back to neutral, then press the lock button on the remote after taking out the key. The VW should chirp and let you know its programmed, if not you mihgt need a VAG to do it.
