Question about Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z1 Digital Camera

Camera won't stay turned on

All of a sudden, my Z1 won't boot up and stay turned on. When I press the ON button, in either of the 3 modes (camera viewer, camera LCD or playback LCD) the zoom lens zooms out and then back in (as it should) but then shuts off automatically. None of the buttons work (while the camera is off, except, of course the ON/OFF button) and the camera shuts off as described before I can get it into the menu mode so I can do a factory reset. I tried new batteries, new SD card, checked the format of the SD card to verify the format was FAT16 not FAT32, checked the batteries to verify there fresh...but so far nothing works. Is there a hard reset procedure for this camera?

Re: camera won't stay turned on

If you need it you can get the user manual on this link; The hard reset involves dismantling the camera and un-soldering the memory/clock back-up battery from the main board (check page 112 under batteries). This battery needs replacing after around 3-5 years and is the most likely cause of your problem - they recommend getting it done at an authorised service centre which is good advice unless you have a lot of technical skill - quite a fiddly job to do and to get to - also professional tools are recommended in order not to damage the camera. Konica Minolta have now passed service responsibility for this camera to Sony - please post back with your location and I can try to find a convenient service centre. The back-up battery in question is probably relatively cheap (you would have to get the serial number from it for me to check for sure), but the labour involved in replacing it may possibly make the replacement a bit costly, but still should be much less than a new camera of the same quality. Hope this helps :)

Is there a timer on this camera?

Yes there is 47 of the manual shows you how .... its an option on the drive mode in the startup menus.

Used for self-portraits, the self-timer will delay the release of the shutter for approximately ten seconds after the shutter-release button is pressed. The self-timer is set on section 1 of the recording menus (p. 44).

With the camera on a tripod, compose the picture so the subject is within the focus frames. Press the shutter-release button partway down to lock the exposure and focus (1). Press the shutter-release button all the way down to begin the countdown (2).

Because focus and exposure are determined when the shutter-release button is pressed, do not stand in front of the camera when taking a self-timer image. Always confirm the focus with the focus signals before beginning the countdown
(p. 25).

The self-timer is counted down on the monitor. During the countdown, the self-timer lamp on the front of the camera (3) will start to blink and is accompanied by an audio signal. A few seconds before the exposure, the self-timer lamp will blink rapidly. The lamp will glow steadily just before the shutter fires.

To stop the countdown, slide the zoom lever to the left or right. The self-timer drive mode is reset to single-frame advance after the exposure. The audio signal can be turned off in section 2 of the setup
menu (p. 83).

Camera goes to sleep too there a way to adjust?

To save battery power, the camera automatically goes into sleep mode and the monitor turns off if there is no operation after 3 minutes when the camera is turned on (when the lens cover is open and the monitor is on). No picture is taken even if the shutter button is fully pressed in this mode. Operate the zoom button or other buttons to restore the camera from sleep mode before taking a picture. If the camera is left on for 15 minutes, it automatically turns off (the lens cover closes and the monitor turns off). Press POWER to turn the camera on.

Viewfinder not coming on!

I found this "solution" on another site and it actually worked!
Turn the camera upside down. Now, with the device off, tap it a few times in your hand. Now, turn the device on in the viewfinder mode. Tap it again if the viewfinder isn't active.
