Question about Iomega ULTRAMAX 1TB TRIPLE INTERFACE FireWire 400 (1394a) Hard Drive

1 Answer

UltraMax 650GB I disconnected the drive from a Mac Mini (running OSX), and the drive stopped responding. The blue light is just flickering and its not responding to anything. Reseting the device isn't working (holding the power button down for 20 seconds), and even when I remove the power cable, it does the same thing when I plug it back in. The drive is fully loaded, and I really need solution. HEEEEELP.

Re: UltraMax 650GB

I would remove the drive from the case and plug it in to my computer directly. Image it, and replace it. All data will be retained.

Why always the RED LIGHT?

Maybe the detection circuit for the diagnostic lights is faulty, if the disk utility found no issues I would continue using the hardware.

I just got a Verbatim 320 GB/Go, USB 2.0. I have a MacBook running OSX (10.4.11). When I plug it in, there's a flashing blue light, no sounds or anything. According to the website, this only happens in...

First let me let out a LMAO to there website. Although the Windows and Mac operating systems are still somewhat different in how they work, the computer you're running OSX on IS a standard "IBM-Clone" or PC and therefore and potential hardware issues are identical regardless of wether it is running Mac or Windows.

The Blue light blinking generally means one of only two things, one the hard drive is active and currently reading or writing files, or two, it has a hardware problem. The fact the light is on usually means you have a good power supply but there are numerous other problems that could cause this.

If you just bought the drive and haven't got any data that is only on this drive, take it back to the store you bought it at and ask to have it replaced as a faulty drive. If you do have any crucial data on the drive already, respond back and I will be happy to offer advice on how to retrieve it.

This can be caused by a few things. Either send it in to be fixed if its under warranty. Or take it apart to get at the hard drive inside and try and plug it in internally to retrieve your files.

Maxtor one-touch mini won't appear on PC

To isolate the problem, please try the steps below:

1. Make sure that the USB ports of your PC are working.
2. Try to connect the device into different USB ports.
3. Try to connect it into different Windows based computer.

Question: Did you reformat this device using your Mac? If yes, there could be a possibility that the device was reformatted using the Mac OSX (Journaled). This type of format would only recognized by Mac computers.

But if it's formatted using the DOS based system, it would work on both Mac and PC.

Running mac osx my acomdata external drive lights

This is the solution that worked for me.
Luckily I have another external drive of the exact same model that is working fine.
I used the power supply from the good working model and plugged it into the bad drive. The bad drive booted right up. Evidently the power supply was the issue, not the drive itself.
Even though the bad power supply had enough juice to light up the drive, it was not able to make the drive spin correctly.

External hard drive doesn't respond

Shut your computer down. Disconnect you external hardrive. Power up your computer again. Power up the Verbatim and then connect to a USB port. You should hear a very quiet 'ping'.

Go to My Computer, and the Verbatim should be showing as one of your drives (probably Drive D). You should be able to open it from there.

Make sure that you have a Desk Top Icon for opening the hardrive, it makes it so much easier. Hope this helps

My wife and I bought an Apple mac computer just over 3 years ago, and as we wanted to store our large collection of CDs on i-Tunes on an external hard-drive and not on the Mac computer drive, we bought an Iomega 1TB Ultramax unit at the same time as the Mac. The Apple shop staff loaded i-Tunes on to the Iomega when we bought the machines, and we've been merrily storing our discs on the Iomega since then. We had them connected by S800 Firewire and had no problems at all in the 3 years. We only had the i-Tunes program on the Iomega, plus the various updates from Apple over the time we had the machines. About 5/6 weeks ago the Iomega started to make some funny noises, the normal whirring became much louder and another noise started too, and the lights at the front of the drive started flashing or going on or staying off for a time but the drive still seemed to be working OK. Finally, last week the machine just stopped altogether. My wife switched it on as usual, at the mains switched 6-gang surge-protected unit, then at the front of the drive, and it started up but with the louder noise and extra noises. She accessed her library and was loading a CD to the Mac to be added to the hard-drive i-Tunes library when the Iomega drive started to falter and the noises slowed and stopped completely, and the front light went out. She switched it off at the front and at the 6-gang unit, left it for about half an hour, and tried again but the Iomega simply stayed dead. My wife called me and we checked what we could; the cabled power supply unit still showed a green light, confirming it was powered up as usual, but there was nothing happening within the Iomega box itself, so it has died. I have seen reviews of Iomega gear on the interweb pages and some of their drives do seem to have problems with their internal power supply units burning out or similar. I'm wondering if this has happened to ours. Could we send our unit to your engineers to check over and let us know if the unit is repairable and the likely cost for the repair? If it cannot be economically repaired, would it be possible to retrieve my wife's i-Tunes library tracks to re-load on a replacement external hard-drive? What would this cost? Sorry for the rambling, and I hope you can help us. Cheers, Mr Francis McDonnell Paisley, Scotland
